I did not get offended. I never get, especially when people I don't know do things that do not affect me.
I have the same humor as you and your friends have... more or less.
I'm also a little sarcastic like you (judging by your last sentence).
But...
A joke is funny the first, the second even the third time... after that it gets dull. It can still be funny for one's inner circle of friends... but when one is a social media persona should be more careful.
He had the same "messing around" attitude way to many times (and I don't follow his social media, so I guess that there are times that I don't know of), so I believe it's not just a "messing around" sense of humor but a personal attitude that, by all means, he has every right to have... like everyone else have the right to judge it.
When someone makes their life public, they give people / followers the green light to comment positive and negative things...

So funny, make the hand gesture with a bunch of *straight* guy in front of the pride flag… You have weird friends—if they even are [friends]. I can take a joke, but I would NEVER accept any friend making that in front of me. They can making joke about gay, i can take it and i don't care but never do the gesture in front of me. To me, it’s no better than someone doing the Nazi salute in front of a Jew as a 'joke.'
