New Style: Prep!

Buddy, prep is so not new. I've been doing it forever because I grew up in Marblehead and didn't know any better and because, when it comes to me, I have no fashion sense in the capitalized meaning of the term.

You can start with Brooks Bros., J. Press and LL Bean. Chinos, polo shirts and topsiders (Sperry) or Bass Weejuns without sox. Get The Preppy Handbook. It's all true.

Just be careful with plaids.

Nick8 is certainly right about prep in olden days! (Well, I speak for myself, no suggestion of Nick's age of course.) I remember I was total prep back in the early 80s when I was in high school. I liked it then, kind of miss it reading about bthegreat taking his image in a new direction. It's a nice clean look, I don't know what the heck happened to me ... all jeans and tshirts or sweatshirts and tennis shoes, all the time these days. I don't even shave so often anymore, not such the clean cut guy of my youth! Can't go wrong with Ralph Lauren, I agree.

What's This Preppy Handbook?

It's a book that was written, I think, by Lisa Birnbaum. Check Amazon.

I know I have to have a clean look, but is there any insider things that I need to do to make the prep transition?

If you don't have a last-name first-name, get one. :biggrin1:

Before you buy into this dreary look. Take a look at a few books and magazines and map out a look that best suits you and your life. This book is a good guide. (But yikes buy a used copy) Dressing right is a look and an attitude that suits you and your lifestyle otherwise you tend to look like you are trying too hard. Looking good defies following trends because you are never in or out of style.

Of course you can also invest in the old style "Converse" tennis shoes.

The Chuck Taylor model, with a pair of casual kakice (sp) trousers and nice plaid shirt and you are set to go. I agree the RL look is certain prepy.

No matter what your style, be honest with yourself and you will fit in.

Lacoste with colars turned up, chinos, denim with rolled hems, Bass weejuns (no socks), cotton or linen blazers, crested shirts, tretorns. Keep colours basic: navys, greens (kelly green is particularly good), pinks, yellows even. Pinstripes and seersucker are cool, too.

Classics are the way to go....and you will never look out of place. Find your own sense of style and stick with it. Style and fashion are not necessarily the same. My style, a sensible pari of kicks, 501's (dark), and an aloha shirt. It's hard to be depressed or down with a splash of color. A nice leather jacket for when the weather turns and a nice pair of gloves and a scarf.

Listen to Nudeyorker and then if you want to read the 30+ year old tongue and cheek salute to the american elite go for it. Nudeyorker is a perennial stunner with a wonderful sense of style which may take you right where you want to go with your look. In fact there are a lot of men on this board who have wonderful senses of style who could also be good mentors to you. Nick8 is also someone you should definitely listen to as well as talking to PrepstudinSC. The name says it all. Classic never goes wrong. If you havent actually seen pictures of these men, a picture is definitely worth a thousand words! LOL!

Lubbock? Baby, you need to definitely check out Nudeyorker's Ralph Lauren suggestion then. It gives you a classy clean all american look. If you dont have a Ralph Lauren budget then check his stuff out on Ebay after you have looked at his style. Make a list or have some of the boys make a list of must have items for you and then go for it. You can get some top of the line pieces on Ebay if you know what you are looking for and can have a wonderfully classic all american look.

The best thing about it was that I meant every word and was able to complete it without invoking a gag reflex! LOL!
