Noam Chomsky

Oh My Fucking God... that is gonna be INCREDIBLE! He is such a big hero of mine... you are sooooo lucky!!!! Try and get some pics of him if you can.. maybe an autograph in your copy of Hegemony or Survival?

God... a hot woman who digs Noam Chomsky... wanna get married?

I'm so enchanted that there are people on LPSG who actually know who Noam Chomsky is. You know he's doing something right when the US Government has him on every "unfriendly to the state" list they can come up with.

He's a very talented genius and a National Treasure. He was also one of my professors. Listen very closely, he makes a point of not speaking quite loud enough so you can easily hear him. It's his schtick.

omg isn't he absolutely amazing?! my creative writing professor is the person who got me familiar with chomsky's work. i'm so excited that someone else knows who he is!! i'm going to sneak my camera in and take pics too, lol.

(and hey, just because i can talk about cock on LPSG all day doesn't mean i don't have an intellectual side )

he was your professor?! no waaaayyyyy!!! i'm jealous

A love of Chomsky? Yet something else we have in common.
His lecture series from about 2004-5 was something I listened to every day - I love the way his mind works.

I have been reading Chomsky since I was about 16. His lectures somewhat surprising as he doesn't speak nearly as eloquenly as he writes; he fumbles with his words and takes strange pauses. I admire him more as a cognitive scientist than a linguist -- Much as I admire Ayn Rand. His simplification of 'the grammar' has made my job more exciting.

Is Nim Chimpsky still around?

...is coming to give a lecture on politics and current events at my college!!! Omg wow, I'm so excited! I'm even taking the day off work to go! Yaaaaaayyyy!!!!! :22:

Shame my taxes... and at exorbitantly rates are going to support this... my guess is UCLA is never "fair/balanced" at providing contrarian views to Mr Chomsky.... maybe you can ask him that....

No offense to the man... but post 1975..... the guy has been riding the $100K+ speaking fee circuit.....

Hmm I'm hot/cold on this one.

I sympathize with much of what Chomsky says, but I really hate the way he says it. He's not a very good writer, and a worse speaker. Usually his political work is just rehashing what other people have said more eloquently or with more nuance and detail. I much prefer Howard Zinn in this regard. Also, Zinn is a much better speaker, and seems like a much nicer guy. And I would take a speech by Arundhati Roy over Chomsky any day of the week.

Regarding linguistics, the guy drives me nuts. (Has anyone ever read The Minimalist Program? Ugh.) I feel like with language, he always asks the right questions, but has the wrong answers.

Stacy - sorry to be a grump. Have a great time!

no offense taken. you're entitled to your own opinion!
