There are alternatives to Nutella.

Here's a few:
Cocoa Hazelnut by Trader Joe's
Merenda a brand from Greece
Bernard Callebaut has a spread as well

the Italian imported variety might also be better for you. Less garbage

Omen-- it's all in moderation my man. Two tablespoons won't kill ya.

Hmm, I wonder if someone would happen to be able to find a recipe for a "Nutella-like" spread, without all the crap, that you could make at home......

Thanks Pandora,
Your english is so good compared to my german or italian. This is easy to convert. I think a small package of baking powder is equal to a teaspoon. I'll try this soon.

Just had a quick look - looks like the rate is 2 teaspoons of baking powder per cup of flour, so (guessing flour weight/volume) 4 to 5 teaspoons for 500g flour. Or, skip that bit and just use self-raising flour.

Another way of getting a more marbled effect is to put random spoons of batter in the tin -some orange first, then some chocolate, then a bit more orange over there, then some chocolate in the gaps, then whatever gets scraped out of the bowl. Swirl them round a bit with a fork and you're good to go!

OK I tried making this last night and just tried it on toast.. It's a pretty damn good spread if I do say so myself. (Crossing nutella off my shopping list)

2 cups hazel nuts toasted and coarsely chopped in a food processor.
Meanwhile melt in a double boiler...
1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate with 1 TBL vanilla & 1 TBL evaporated milk+ a pinch of salt and stir in 1/2 cup powdered sugar.

I ran the hazelnuts in the food processor until sandy in consistency and added 1/2 cup of hazelnut oil through the feed tube and let it drip in through the pusher until creamy. and then poured the melted chocolate in the feed tube and mixed until completely blended. I added about 1/2 cup powdered sugar to set it a bit more and divided it in two jars and refrigerated it over night.

NotSoDumb_Blond I'll try your recipe too!

That one sounds great!!! I wonder if you added cocoa powder instead of semi sweet if it would drop those calories down a bit? But not lose the taste? I'm experimenting this weekend!! There has to be a semi -- less fattening but still yummy recipe out there....!!!

I had my strawberries and nutella toast at a faculty meeting today!!! Ha, didn't share either! :biggrin1:

I'll play around with the next batch but this one was so sublime I hate to cut corners. I was actually thinking of going to one of the shops that sell fresh unwrapped chocolate and really going to town with this. I'm really getting ahead of myself with all of this as I have two big jars of nutella in the pantry that I'm not throwing away.

HAAHA!! Oh my...well, yes, I know that feeling. I can only imagine if you went and got some really good dark chocolate, maybe some french chocolate, what the result would be. You might have to hide the results from company!

This is the best thread on the site. Just sayin' After reading through some of it, I now feel that I've been far too unadventurous with my nutella life... *looks through house for things to spread nutella on*

Surprise... Surprise... I'm registered to get food updates. I can't post the one I received from Huffington Post because it has a link in it that contains the television ad (that has actors under 18)
First of all I can't believe they were dumb enough to run an ad claiming Nutella is healthy and I can't believe anyone was dumb enough to believe them. (Read the label people you might learn something)...Nutella settles lawsuit for $3 million | GlobalPost

I love Nutella. I like to eat it a spoonful at a time. Bread just ruins it for me. Unfortunately, I haven't bought it in forever due to my health kick!

The fact that someone can sue over something like this is just crazy to me. Read the label people!

PS: It's extra special yummy in brownies...
