I was watching the "Hung Up" video for the umpteenth time and I was positively transfixed. For those who do like Madonna, what is it? For me, she's the bad girl big sister I always wished I had. Why do you think she's so popular?

I've always liked her music - it tends to be edgy, hip and fun. She's not the best singer, nor do I necessarily agree with her politics, but she knows how to put out good music.
I think part of her allure is that while she has a 'wholesome' name, she portrays herself in a sexual manner 'behind the scenes'. Many men like that in their women - a lady in public and a whore in bed. This duality coupled with good catchy music makes for a successful formula which she has benefited from.

I have actually made some gay men angry before, just simply by saying that I am not a big fan of Madonna, Cher, Babs, Bette, Judy, Patti, or any of the other "great gay divas." Why do some guys harbor such animosity if I don't share their love of gay bar music? Some of it is just dreadful. Yes, it does have a boom-boom ("good dance music"). But I know guys that have the albums at home and listen to them as if it were real music. Uh, if the big excuse is that it is good dance music, well, then, uh, fine - that does not mean good listening music.
Can anyone explain to me the aggressive defense?
