I agree with your first para. And sort of related but maybe not - I think being blatantly publicly and privately inconsistent is the only reason to out closetted men, especially those in positions of power e.g. men who are being critical of the queer community or politicians who might even be passing laws harmful to the queer community while engaging in sex with men. I havent seen real evidence that these men have been "publicly criticizing non-monogamous relationships and then doing different behind scenes, or making any other self-inconsistent claims" (although I havent read every post here), but I would have said that was indeed hypocritical.
