Yes, it's a risk that you take. I'm glad that you were cool about it. Dan Savage has talked about this in his "Savage Love" advice column. If you're having anal sex, you will inevitably come across some fecal matter...sometimes a little, sometimes a lot. Simply put, it comes with the territory. If you want to enjoy anal sex, you've got to accept that this is going to happen once in a while and be prepared to deal with it. As someone once said to me, "that's why you cover the sheets with an old towel."
I don't have time to go looking for it, but there's a long-running thread on here somewhere about "how to have anal sex." A few weeks ago someone posted a link to a site that had lots of useful "how to" advice for bottoms including a) how to check if you are clean and b) how to clean yourself out if you are not.
Unfortunately, for some people it's not as simple as cleaning yourself out. Even if the rectum is clean, there's a whole colon potential fully of shit right above it. Depending on how long it's been since the bottom ate, the colon probably has something in it, unless he's been fasting or on a liquid diet. My theory is that for some men, stimulation of the anus causes the bowels to move, so things start off fine and then you end up with a mess. I haven't found a solution to that yet. It may just be that some men are ill-suited to being bottoms.
As for how to get him back...I don't know. I'm not very good at relationships. Maybe you should just talk to him and let him know that you thought things were really going well and that you still want to be with him. Maybe if you help him overcome his embarrassment about this incident he'll come around. Good luck.
