I've done both. The ONLY difference I noticed between using my bathmate and a regular pump is the price I paid for the pump. Bathmates are pretty expensive. The best pump I have bought was an electric pump I found on Amazon for around $20. It has a couple of settings, is rechargeable and very cheap. It works great and I've had no problems with it.

I have an air pump and a Bathmate, with the Bathmate I do actually feel like it works and over a long period of time does lead to enlargement whereas the air pump is temporary.
