When I was with my ex, who happens to not be white, we would go out to eat fairly often. Once I heard a waitress say "great, we're not getting a tip from *that* table", to her hostess.
1. It's a common racist opinion that black people don't/won't ever tip.
2. He wasn't paying, *I* was. Assuming the man is going to pay for the entire meal on a dinner date is sexist.
So, I way, way overtipped to their faces. I commented sternly, but not loudly that maybe next time, if we ever come back to that restaurant (which we didn't) maybe we wouldn't get treated like shit because of some racist college fuckhead who thinks that because they come from privilege they can speak about people the way they spoke about us.
I know most people would refuse to tip, but having waited and served food myself (which I was at the time, that's how I made my money up until 3 years ago) I knew... They'd remember it a lot more significantly by catching them off guard with a tip larger than the price of both our meals combined.
They expected no tip. And it probably blew their minds that I quietly, but eloquently cussed them out as I gave them that fat-ass tip. If that asshole didn't learn something that day, it's willful ignorance.
