Recycling your trash

I love to recycle!! I feel it's something we can all do to conserve and replanet.

We are given 3 trash cans. One for regular trash, one for mixed recyclables and another for lawn trimmings.

I sort everything carefully. I check to make sure plastics have a triangle with a number in the center before placing them in the recycle bin. Plastic bags which also contain a number are placed in one large plastic bag and tied off at the top. The 'other' plastic bags which state Store Drop-off are placed in a bin outside my local grocery store. Other things in my recycling bin-frozen dinner boxes, Diet Coke 2 liter bottles, take out containers from restaurants, junk mail, paper sacks, dental floss container, bottle of body wash, old IKEA catalog.

Hope others are conscience about this too and care about our one planet earth...

I'm all about recycling any and everything I possibly can. I only use glass or metal containers when I store leftovers. I even bring home things from my friends homes that don't recycle if I'm over. It baffles me that they won't take the time to get a couple trash cans to do so. I have a handy pullout cabinet in my island where all my recycle bins are, super easy system.

I do many small things to be honest, trash in the right place, saving and using stuff for second purpose, sharing still good things with others and saving broken things I find, fix and share with those that may need. Very poor area around here, many without. It adds up.

I made some pretty serious pocket money as a kid collecting drink bottles, scrap metal and stuff. Was the envy on cracker night all loaded up with my fireworks :) Been into recycling all my life....trouble is, not all recycling goes to recycling centres. Just last week it was exposed that 80% of what people were recycling was going to the fill sites.

It's because it is cheaper to make goods from new materials than recycle. This was an undercover expose done by 4 Corners here. If you are serious about it, really research into, contact your council to make sure your recyclables, and your effort are not going to waste.

I used to recycle everything that I could. Now I only recycle glass and metal, after doing reading from many sources about recycling.

one green recycle bin for plastics bottles only/glass,given us in this region, collected weekly
all in, we assume that particular council sorts it all at there depot
i phoned them and surprize surprize they do
BUT
she did not know/supposedly couldent tell me
what happened to the seperated items after that

we all know its to damn expensive/ie no money to be made
for anyone to have huge non polluting smelter plants etc, esp local councils huh
and NZ does not have a major facility for all councils
as to if we send it overseas/twice as bad,why should they take our rubbish, plus ridiculous transport costs etc

as for 'ordinary household rubbish
anything goes
all into a plastic bag, yellow or black prepaid
and i mean anything/everything,imagne batteries could be disposed quite readily this way/LANDFILL

we all TRY but often its 1/2 hearted i geuss
often false dreams sad to say

contact your council to make sure your recyclables, and your effort are not going to waste...

Two trash carts here. Regular landfill trash picked up weekly. Mixed recyclables picked up bi-weekly.

And the recyclables *are* routed to a sorting and processing plant. There was a mix-up when a few trucks were sent to the landfill instead. The waste management company was publicly shamed and heavily fined.

Of course it helps to buy products made from recycled material, or better yet products with minimal packaging in the first place.

I have a stack of bins in my garage for glass, paper and aluminum. We don't have curbside pickup, so we have to haul this away. At the recycle center we have to separate it even further! There's clear, green and brown glass. Then shiny paper, newsprint and everything else. Cardboard goes in its own container as well. You really have to be dedicated.

But I'm glad we don't have curbside pickup because people would think I'm an alcoholic for sure!

I did a search and was surprised to find there wasn't already a thread on recycling. Thanks for the interesting responses.

@notN2pussy Thanks for the quick response after I created this thread.

@MickeyLee I might look into a minimal waste lifestyle (or at least research it online). Might be a good idea to use things made with recycled packaging or minimal packaging.

@kcrown1967 One day I was at my sister's house. Anyway, she gave me a cardboard box to take home and place in my mixed recycle bin.

@vibrationzzz That was disappointing to read!!

@Bendy Maybe you could contact your trash company and ask about electronics?

@EllieP I wonder why they don't have curbside pickup in your area. Got a good laugh out of the alcoholic comment.

I live in a very small community, and we're lucky to have trash pickup! Seriously, we have to drive about 15 miles to the recycle center.

Thanks orangeC for the latest like!!

I'm always searching for new ways to conserve. There is a Chinese restaurant I sometimes go to for takeout. I used to throw out the cardboard box which had the entree and other which contained the rice. Since the rice box is clean, it's now going into the recycling bin. The chopsticks paper wrapping is also now being recycled instead of dumped. With takeout meals, I would not take the plastic utensils and would use my own at home-a few less things going into a landfill. However, with food delivery they always give you plastic utensils.

Have been using hand sanitizer instead of disinfecting wipes, nothing ends up in a landfill.

Continuing to help our planet.....

My house recycles as much as possible. Three trash can: one for garbage, another for recyclables and the last one for plastic wrap and bags That everything comes in. I take my own cloth bags to shop with and filter water. I try to compost as much as I can even cardboard or those gray egg cartons. Old clothing goes to Goodwill. Electronics get tossed in the Collection bins a some big box stores. Garden waste composts or my town collects it twice a month and grinds it up and residents can pick up the mulch at the district park. The district does a really great job.
It is every one’s responsibility to conserve and preserve by mindful shopping and recycling.
