It's instructive to compare Cushing's current sitch to Dr. Mike who had his own COVID party scandal. Arguably Dr. Mike's offense was much more serious since (1) he's a freaking doctor, (2) has a much larger platform, and (3) there's actual photographic evidence of him with a bunch of almost naked models.

But Mike is mostly back to his pre-scandal status without the event consuming any more energy even on this forum, why?
  1. He actually put out an apology video, even though it was poorly received, at least he gave a permission structure for fans to put the thing behind.
  2. He did not get immediately personal or defensive after the apology so as to hollow the remorse out
  3. Most importantly, he provides value to viewers more than just being pretty on screen. Sure he's super easy on the eyes, but his videos do have educational and entertainment values to some extent. Eye candy is not the only reason someone can like his content.
Which shows the real problem Sam can't seem to shake the scandal, is that he gives nothing to his viewers except smiling his uneasy smile in exchange of sponsorship. Even if his thirsty gay fans want to defend him, how are people supposed to defend an empty cardboard figure? Ironically Dr. Mike could fare off much better even if he burnt down with the scandal, though he obviously loves the fame and glory he doesn't need them financially; but Sam had to crawl back to his mommy. Sam & Jake truly gave a masterclass on what not to do in a PR struggle, going with the wrong strategy (faux remorse, getting defensive & taking everything personally, online feuding) at every turn.

^ This.

They could have done some YT together (shirtless & in sweatpants with a pronounced bulge) where they answered questions from disgruntled followers, talked about lessons learned, and issued apology after apology.

(Once done filming, they'd high-five each other while saying, "GURRRRL, our followers are totally gonna buy that shit!")

I still haven't seen either of them officially plug a brand yet; Dr. Bryce is back at it with the prepared meals and such.

Dr. Mike’s indiscretion was barely called out, and his apology was on his least viewed platform.

The speed of information allowed his to go mostly under the radar. The comments were barely negative when it was all blowing up. Gays Over COVID didn’t start to get mainstream attention until PV happened, and Mike is much more known in straight circles. Sam was at a perfect storm moment and also handled the fall out pathetically. Dr. Mike did too, IMO, but he didn’t do it during an internet sleuth tornado looking to expose hypocrisy and irresponsibility. Sam is also paying the price for others that escaped full accountability because of his generic style. Again, perfect storm.

That's why I emphasized the permission structure to forgive. Objectively Dr. Mike actions with his much larger platform as a medical professional did not make him any more forgivable. But the thing is fans want to forgive him, and he provided a path for them to do so. People can conceivably point to his half-ass apology video and say "see he's sorry, and think of how much good he has done educating people?"

But Sam has none of that, he's just an one dimensional eye candy and people can't point to any positive he did in the past to counter the scandal. Thirsty simps aren't fans, and he even leveraged his looks into monetary gains, so they can't say "he's just living life, why focus on him?" That combined with pent-up anger from gays being locked down for so long means, as you said, a perfect storm. Finally I'd like to note Sam was not called out outside social media even on gay-focus news outlets, it's his faux apology and the ensuing outrage that ironically put his actions on the mainstream.

Sam has but we’re not allowed to talk about it.

Christ, the poor boy is on his instastories seeking help for watching Bridgerton and asking how many episodes he needs to watch before getting sucked in because it’s all such a struggle. This is Shonda Fucking Rhimes not BBC Shakespeare! People here have been saying he’s dumb as a box of rocks, but I thought he was more, but between the handling of his scandal and this I’m reluctantly going to agree. If he were younger he’d be perfect for a gender swap remake of Clueless, but I fear that Emma inspired plot might be too much for him as well.

I thought the gay dude surfer bro thing was an act lol

Is that even a thing. Buying followers? Hahaha how insecure does someone have to be to buy followers?
If this is true he’s so f-ing dumb then like we all know instagram is a dying platform anyway lol why would you buy fake followers rather than improve your contents hahaha

It's easy to buy followers. They're bots that like and leave comments like fire emojis. It drives engagement stats which sponsors look for.

On the lower end it doesn’t appear to be expensive $90 gets you 1000 followers, $1300 can get you 15,000 on the pricier side. Doing a quick look, it appears $600 - $800 per post is what someone with 100k followers would make. So selling those vitamins and hair regrowth products does look lucrative for very little effort.

Well, all this seems to show that he wasn't the kind and socially aware guy he seemed to be in his older videos. It is like seeing two different men now.

The kind of guy he appeared to ve before the incident was just a character?
I don't know how to process him anymore.
