Sam Elliott with his thick 'stache and longish hair was a product of the 1970's, perhaps coming straight out of Southern California. I remember seeing him in the movie Lifeguard and feeling absolutely ravished by his hirsute virility.
I had a Physics professor in college in the early 1970's who had those very same qualities. His first name was Maurice. He was trying to teach me differential equations and other types of advanced math. I didn't learn much under him. I had a terrible crush on him and in my heart of hearts I desperately wanted to have sex with him! But of course, fraternization of professors and students were off limits in those years!
Then we entered the Ronald Reagan 1980's when many men began shaving off their facial hair and becoming clean shaven again. But it is heartening in the last decade or so, guys are once again growing beards, mustaches, and goatees again. But the piece de resistance of manliness is to see a guy's hairy chest, abs, thighs, etc.

He's not a bad actor either...I prefer his later stuff.
