I thought it was cheaper to edit hardcore porn to fit the soft core format. Maybe? Thoughts?
Some studios are still producing softcore. It's a niche audience, but sometimes its the only way to bypass certain laws. For example; in south korea, hardcore porn is banned, so softcore is the onlything allowed to be produced.

Yes, very true! I kinda feel in a sense movies like 365 Days and TV like Sex/Love are kinda bringing softcore back into mainstream in a sense. I also have noticed there are a lot of Philippino/Pinoy movies (I hope I'm categorizing it correctly) that focus a lot on softcore, which I had no idea about until early last year.
