It's surprising how much difference you can feel in a millimeter or two. When it comes to stretching, I'm a big fan of the Hegar stainless steel sets, because each smooth sound is 1mm thicker at one end than the other and so allows you to stretch very gradually. I can currently take both ends of the 9/10mm rod all the way, but am struggling with the next size up, which is 11/12mm. I can get the 11mm end in by a few inches and the 12mm in by about half an inch. I use quite a runny, water based lube which runs down the sound and goes inside easily. It sounds boring, but patience is the key, and obviously don't try too much pressure or you risk injury.
This is my Hegar set. The loose one in the middle is 9/10mm which I'm happy with. The one to the left is 11/12mm and is my next goal.
