I’m normally a lurker in the more pornographic sections of LPSG. But I wanted to open a thread about countries that have the death penalty for being not-heterosexual or maintaining a birth sex, or not being permitted to transition.

im male from the UK, and still live here. I’m 99% gay but would love to travel and live in other parts of the world.

I would just like to hear about peoples experiences from countries that are homophobic and countries that have the death penalty for same sex relations.

While I agree that it is important to avoid travel to countries that block the basic human freedoms, I share a deep concern for the people who live in daily fear because they were born gay or trans. Some are put to death while others are sentenced to prison for t to he remainder of their lives. Those put to death are often savagely displayed as a warning to others. Personally, I have contributed to groups that work for their safety and their escape. We enjoy too many freedoms that we take for granted in our lives. Admittedly, some countries are more entrenched in their beliefs than others, but until all gay and trans people are free of violence, fear for their lives and discrimination, the remainder of this planet needs to advocate for them. My concerns also spread to those who suffer religious persecution and women and girls, but the gay issue is near and dear to my heart.

In my country, I know people who don't have problems because they are gay. These are the top men who have made a good career. Of course they don't say publicly that they are gay, but everyone around them knows. Discrimination extends to those who are bottom or who look weak. There were rumors about me, look this bi guy, it was not pleasant. One day they threatened me. I went to the police, but they didn't listen to me. I discharged from my job.

I know this isn’t a confortable topic, I appreciate and agree entirely with you. There are hundreds of thousands of people in LGBTQ+ That face the death penalty if they announce who they are. What are we doing as a world where we cannot just let people be who they are or what they want to be.

The only outwardly homophobic county I have been to is Jamaica - they love to hate on the "batty man."

I wanted to go because it's a beautiful island, I enjoy Jamaican food, reggae and ganja. I was nervous as fuck but my partner and I went; and survived. No need to return!

We spent the week on a resort with guided tours only. Everyone was kind and friendly but clearly gossiping about the two white boys sitting/eating together. We were asked on numerous occasions "where are your girls?" "are you brothers?" "handsome men need pretty gals" etc etc.

Gwaaaaaaan

It's easy to say boycott and avoid etc but if you have a job where you travel the world that's not an option.
Most of the countries that are discriminatory are dictatorships so the will of the people doesn't count.
Currently it's easy to boycott Russia because of the war, less difficult to do the same for China.
However if individuals put pressure on governments maybe just maybe there will be change, but first, get rid of the tyrants!

yikes! i've never been but your story makes me kinda nervous to go, now.

insecurity
fear
it s hell... when tourists go, people know what s going on, generally they don't show hate towards (white people) but towards locals... jail... rape... harassement... violance...
if you are acting manly it could be ok to hide it... still... it s a big risk

As a 65yr old Gay we never stop fighting for the rights .....I think something younger Gays in the West may have taken for granted.....I live in the UK I fought for the dissolution Clause 28 and for Gay people to be seen not having to stick to Ghetto parts of Cities...... that's not ACCEPTANCE.
I hold the belief that Gay persons areTOLERATED not accepted that is why as a minority we never stop calling out prejudice......we LGBT all have to do it together.
Why visit a country that is happy to take the pink pound but happy to throw their own citizens off roof tops etc !!!

Wise words. In western countries our rights can be taken away pretty easily if there is a parliamentary majority to do so.

In presidential systems like a certain north american country a conservative president just needs to sign an executive order.

Being a Black/African-American born and raised in the United States, I'd say racism/being a Black tourist might not necessarily be a bigger issue, but an issue to which if you are a POC LGBTQ/gay person (which I am) doesn't score you any points.

I've heard so many horror stories of Black people visiting Europe or other places and having less than openly clandestine experiences and stories to tell. You guys can block/punish me all you want, but if you're a white gay/LGBTQ person, honestly nobody is gonna give a fuck, and they at most will just deport you if you show any PDA or signs that you're gay in a country which doesn't support that. I'd say if you're Black/Brown that's when you run the risk of assault/harassment, as they may think you're Riff raff/you sneaked onto a boat or something or get there, and you're acting "Gay" so it's really sad, and it's a sensitive topic nobody talks about, but yeah.

If you're a Black/POC LGBTQ person wanting to travel that's when you run into issues, because you're gonna get treated both as a Black person and a LGBTQ person. Then if you want to visit your "mother land/native land"; it's even worse. It's sad as much as I love African/Caribbean culture, Jamaica, and aside from South Africa (even then there is tension in SA) the entire continent of Africa is anti LGBTQ and it's sad but it is what it is at the moment I guess. These countries/cultures aren't on a drop of a nail going to change their opinions like that.

Reason #37272 why being Gay sucks but oh well. It's a life we have to live, and yeah.

Here from South Africa. No there's no homophic, anti LGBT, ETC... heck there isn't even "tension" we have regular gay pride events, alot of people are out the closet, alot of gay parties and clubs, so no being gay doesn't suck, and no we are not targeted everyone just carries on with life
