Dunno about the UK, but for guys of my generation (born '60) tighty whities like this were the absolute norm. Almost no other guys in school that I went to wore anything else.

Yeah, boxers took over in around the late 80's, I think. What a pity. In my teen and college years, boxers were considered old-man underwear. I have no idea how that attitude got flipped 180 degrees.
