You can do exactly that in your settings. Click on your avatar at the top-right of the page, then select “Alert Preferences.”

Alert preferences will just notify you when a new file is attached. I think you will still have to read through the 200 "he looks like he smells" posts to find the images

A simpler solution is to just add the people that repeatedly post that into your ignore list and gasp at how the thread is suddenly 50 pages shorter.

Actually, when you go to ‘alert preferences’ and set it to ‘attachments,’ when you get the notification and click on that, it takes you to THAT attachment that was posted. You can choose to stay and read, which I do, sometimes.
