A DEEP COMPASSION (1972) Jaguar Productions.
The film was originally known as "Love God" but unfortunately there was a Don Knotts film by the same name a few years before. The name was changed, I suppose, to avoid confusion. Can you imagine dropping off your kids at the Pussycat Theatre, thinking they are going to a Don Knotts film?The plot of the film is a total mess. Entirely too much of it, IMHO. Enough plot for five films. It involves escaped convicts, a blind hero, a fantasy apparition, and lots of other touches which would have been better left untouched. The blind twink uses his white cane to beat someone to death.
The blind twink is played by David Arlen, aka David Allen, who was also in a couple of other Jaguar films at about this same time. Here David turns in what Manshots refers to as "an embarrassing performance." An understatement. They don't make films like this anymore. TG.
Jim Cassidy plays the Love God. Typecasting for sure, but at least he furnishes something to watch. Jim was cast in the film by Pat Rocco, who was directing it. In an interview in Manshots, June 1996, Barry Knight, the cameraman, recalls Cassidy as being a total professional and very polite. As for David Allen/Arlen, Knight refers to him as a "kind of namby-pamby."
