Snapchat is a lot better I find. Whenever I've joined telegram it instantly emails friends to say I've joined, as soon as I've registered with phone number. You can disable that in settings, but that's after the fact, it alerts everyone as default.
Snapchat can be used with just an email address. I'm not as bothered personally, but these sort of things are a dealbreaker for those who want to stay under the radar.
