Why Did Playgirl Not Succeed?

Fine, you win. I can’t be bothered to read all that every time. Maybe when I was in my 20s and a passionate student working on a bachelors, but not as a 50 something recently retired veteran with a bunch of honey-do’s and other projects.

Let me know if you want the book. It’s really good and I think you would enjoy it.

Simple... women aren't as visual as men. That's why most porn is aimed at men, and more men, back in the day, looked at Penthouse and Playboy than women looked at Playgirl. A guy gets hard looking at a random pic of a woman. I doubt most women get dripping wet.

Billy Crystal said it best... "Women need a reason to have sex. Men just need a place."

Yeah... not quite. Back when magazines were big, how many adult mags were aimed at women vs men? Penthouse, Playboy, Hustler, Oui,.... vs what else aside from Playgirl?

And porn... is it focused on men or women?

Sorry MV. Not a generalization.

The dicks weren't big enough.:p

Women are just as visual as men are. Many women get sexually aroused when they find a man's body and face attractive. I have no idea where this comes from. The difference between men and women is that latter has on-off control button that men in general don't have.

lol Is it that women aren't as visual as men or is it that men think women aren't as visual as men? And only think they are when it comes time to attack feminists?

See, a lot of people think this until it comes to dating. Then women are entirely visual and entirely not visual somehow all at the same time. :p

Yes, very shit generalizations. Just cuz mainstream media/culture still want to push that women are prude and the whole Madonna/whore thing does no mean is actually truth. Know more women who would read those magazines than men. FHM and others too. Alt lifestyle/kinky shit as well. Your experience/view? Not universal/from God's mouth/etc.

Speaking of generalizations... :/

The problem is turning “men are more visual...” into a dichotomy, “...so women aren’t”. Sure women are visual. Hot firefighter calendars, tight football player butts, and whatever else turns you on. The difference is that men are “visual stimulation - ready for sex”. Women (generally) have a bunch of psychological steps in between.

“No generalization is wholly true...” still applies.

I went into news agents to buy it when I was about 18. The shop keeper looked a bit shocked!
I remember my first time buying playgirl. I was 18, just finished college for the day and walked to a news agent about a mile away from my college. The shop keeper didn't bat an eyelid, but I was so nervous, but that turned to excitement when I was served without any problems. I put the magazine in my backpack, walked the mile into town & caught the bus home, which was about 30 minutes, feeling a nervous excitement knowing I had the magazine in my bag.

The difference between men and women is that latter has on-off control button that men in general don't have.
It think this very caveat is precisely why men think women arent as visual. Because that control button or lack of its use is precisely why just about all visual expressions of sex and pornography are geared towards men.
So maybe we need to start implying that perhaps women on average just arent as visually motivated to act on their sexual impulses instead of simply saying women arent visual.
And frankly a lot of men should be thanking their lucky stars because of this because it means the Patton Oswalds of the world are just as likely to attract women as the Jason Momoas.

A woman’s porn is tv shows and magazines about relationships

A mans porn is sexual obviously

men give relationships to get sex
Women give sex to get relationships

This has somewhat been the status quo for sometime now

seems both genders tend to fantasize about what is harder to achieve

seems men have a harder time getting free hook ups while women have a harder time getting a good relationship

probably why play girl didn’t workout for women

Which woman?

I'm surprised at the audacity of some of the men in this thread answering on behalf of women. Well, actually, I'm not surprised.

We have our own smut thread in Women's Issues where we share images we find arousing - disproving some of these generalisations. Actually here in WI.

Here’s a selection from the book I’ve been referencing that’s a little more illuminating, raising further questions.

“Meredith Chivers is an assistant professor of psychology at Queen’s University in Canada. As the director of the Sexuality and Gender Laboratory at the university, she is one of the world’s leading researchers on the neuropsychology of female desire. In 2004, Chivers conducted an ingenious experiment to find out what turns women on.

She invited women to her lab and showed them a variety of erotic pictures. Chivers measured their arousal from viewing the pictures in two different ways. First, she asked them how they felt—a measure of conscious, psychological arousal. Second, she inserted a plethysmograph into their vaginas—the female version of the device used to measure erections in the jar of pennies experiment. The plethysmograph measured blood flow in women’s vaginal walls—a measure of physical arousal. But the most interesting part of Chivers’s experiment was the pictures themselves.

They consisted of photographs depicting exercising men, exercising women, gay sex, lesbian sex, straight sex—and monkey sex. One of the images showed copulating bonobos, a type of primate also known as the pygmy chimpanzee.

So which images elicited physical arousal in the women? All the images, even the monkey porn. Women’s vaginal blood flow increased after viewing each erotic picture. Which images elicited psychological arousal—which caused the women to say they were turned on? Heterosexual sex generated the greatest psychological arousal, followed by lesbian sex. Watching people exercise wasn’t much of a turn-on. The reported amount of psychological arousal from watching monkey porn? A very emphatic zero.

In other words, there was a dissociation between the conscious arousal of the mind and the unconscious (or semiconscious) arousal of the body. When the exact same experiment was conducted with male subjects, there was virtually no dissociation between the two types of arousal. If a man was physically turned on, he was also psychologically turned on. And none of the men got turned on by monkey sex.

This intriguing dissociation between the mind and body in women seems to reflect a common experience among women that is frequently unvoiced. “Thanks to you women who wrote about the dichotomy between getting turned on and (intellectually) being turned off,” writes one woman on Salon.com, in response to an article addressing why women don’t watch porn. “Just last night my husband was asking me to watch porn with him and I was trying to explain that after about 10 minutes of it I’m more turned off than on (even if I’m turned on too—the other part won’t let me enjoy it). I think it would be easier to be a guy when it comes to porn—having all this conflicting stuff flying around my brain and body makes me crazy.”

Interesting

Some doctors attribute the disconnect between autonomic body response and actual sexual arousal from sexual images as a biological means to protect women from the physical damage her body is more likely to receive from non-consensual penetration. The body will send blood flow to the cooter complex, lubrication happens, tenting. Monkey brain triggers from way back in the when we fell out of the trees. It's a similar trigger that sets women who cohabitate menstrual cycles to sync. But I think the team period thing is more about genetic competition and having more mom-mode womangs to group care for offspring.

Darkly so, it's the reason victims of sexual assault can achieve orgasm. Not because of unconscious or unacknowledged arousal, a simple biological response. Same as hitting a knee with a wee medical hammer.

That folks still cannot understand the difference in a physiological trigger and earnest arousal/desire is fripping sad. *sigh*

Porn is my porn. That and some reading that is porn that pretends to be a novel.

I have sex because sex is fun and I like the person. In past, was sex because fun and I could tolerate the person. Am pickier as I get older. Had to shut some fuckers down who wanted to turn casual funsies into a relationship. But naw, sure, you right : unamused:
