Obviously if you're lying from the start, I doubt you'll confess here, but I still have to ask. I've noticed it a lot on another site where I belong, that everyone thinks it's cool, or something, to put their location as Beverly Hills. It's painfully obvious from their photos, that about 90% of them aren't (the rusted out pickup trucks in front of the swamp in the backgrounds of ALL of the photos in one gallery, pretty much gave it away). So, all of these people are constantly showing up in my list of "suggested LOCAL friends", when they're at least 1,000 miles away. It's annoying.

I've noticed it quite a bit here as well. User NYCbornNbred (example, not a real user here), ends up actually being in Germany, having never been to the U.S., but still posts that NYC is his location, and makes generalized references to it.

So, why do YOU do it? Privacy? Why not just leave the location blank?

I never lie about mine and I've never really seen any reason too. California is a huge place and I still have yet to just randomly bump into someone I've chatted with before. Though I have run into someone I saw on another online site and recognized his face right away but since we didn't know each other I didn't say anything.

I do leave my location blank on occasion though. My pictures are somehow able to be easily noticed and identified by anyone who's ever met me before.

Privacy is a big deal, sure. Many people are in professions that might suffer if it were public you were hanging with the big pecker guys. Or you've got a big pecker and actually talk about " those things". Oh my! Or gawd forbid, talks about hubby's pecker.....penis.
And you say penis. And those other nasty words. ACK...the shame!

You just dont know how people would react.

I don't quite lie. I'm in southern California. But was born and raised in Phila. Subs.

I notice a lot of fictional locations here, Atlantis, No where near you, Offworld Colonies...etc. But yeah, out of fear, real or imagined, I believe people lie on their location to have absolutely no chance of being discovered here, especially if you have naked pictures of yourself posted.

Some may not be very proud of being found on here by people they know IRL hence the fake locations.

Another reason is some people are here to live out their fantasies and be someone who they are not, ie a Beverly Hills resident (as if that's so glamorous, *eyeroll*).

Well, who would want to be from Mukwonago, Wisconsin, when it's just as easy to type in Barcelona?

Certainly from my experience with the FME forums I use, privacy can be a concern, especially when two high ranking scene members have had their jobs and livelihood threatened and other members stalked.

It really needs to be left to the user in question, just how much of themselves they want the world to know, as an old saying about the net put's it..... once out there on the net, it's hard to delete.

As it stands, only two members here have my cell number (One of which is a member of staff), and another two have a contact postal address, and even then, I only released this information after a number of years being on this forum, and getting to know them.

When folks ask me where I am in the UK, I give my general locale as near East Midlands Airport (I border three counties of Derbyshire (Technicality my home county), Nottinghamshire, and Lecistershire), so if it ever comes a time that they maybe interested in meeting up, it gives them enough idea what traveling they would need to do.

I am quite honest Eastern town covers a large area.

Location lies are not near as bad as the gender liars which are worse even than the size liars.

Sometimes a location lie can be good for a laugh. A person will be posting about life in a place.....and then their profile shows them living another place entirely.
It might be in the want ads here, a person says they want someone in New Hampshire but their profile says they are in Seattle (that actually took place here the other day).

Privacy or not liking where they are or some other reason, it's their stuff and I can't lose sleep over it.

Red Herring? To throw someone off the scent if they're afraid that they have been too indiscreet about the details of their life and they don't want to be recognized by someone that they know IRL?

That would be my guess.

For the record, I've never lied about my location. I just don't tell people where I am if I don't want them to know.
