Women's Issues Random Thoughts

Ok, I haven't seen anyone mention "the slap" in this thread yet, if someone has and I missed it my bad.

1. Fuck the Oscars. Grammy's. Emmy's.. fuck all that nonsense. Bunch of overpaid, arrogant fuckers stroking their own egos. No thanks.

2. Jada should have scolded him (her slap happy husband) on the spot for acting like a fucking toddler. On camera. Just my opinion.

3. The joke itself wasn't even offensive. GI Jane was a powerful character. Being bald due to literally whatever reason (medical condition or personal choice) isn't ugly or unattractive. I think she looks great with a bald head.

Sorry if I piss someone off with this... It. Was. A. JOKE. He's Chris Rock. He makes jokes. Some are kinda "offensive".

And I get it. If I lost my hair I'd have a hard time coping. I've had friends make jokes about my crooked teeth and it hurt. But if my fella got up and slapped someone over it like an immature little bitch I'd have something to say to him on the spot.

I just had to get that off my chest because people can't seem to shut the fuck up about it. Had to vent. As you were.

Re: the Slap at the Oscars. Will Smith was totally wrong to use physical force/violence to address Chris Rock's lame joke.

That said, there are times where words hurt. Well beyond what any of us may think. Even if the intent is/was not there. Doesn't matter except to the person on the receiving end of such words. This apparently was one of those times.

As someone who started losing my hair in my early 20s, the last thing I ever needed was to be reminded about it. Whether mentioning it or telling a joke about it at my expense. It always made me feel less than.

As someone who worked closely with an African American woman who suffered from alopecia areata, I know first-hand how any mention/jokes about her condition were not welcome. Ever. Tears after such an event were not uncommon; she too always felt less than.

It's one thing to shave your head for a movie role; it's quite another to shave your head because you have a hair loss affliction.

I don't know Jada and Will Smith. But I would think that being married as long as they have, Will would know how Jada has struggled with her hair loss. And that Chris Rock's joke was a gut punch to Jada.

Again, not excusing Will's behavior. But we all need to be mindful that we don't always know the dynamic and why some folks react the way they do to certain comments.

Words matter!

I fully acknowledge that. Fully. Words do matter. There's a reason I refuse to smile with my teeth showing. Not the same as hair loss, but similar enough that I understand what it's like to have someone say something about your looks when you didn't have a choice. Same with my psoriasis. I've heard very hurtful things. Me? I still would have scolded the fucker for not being a grown human being about it.

Just venting my thoughts. If my man reacted like that, calling MORE attention to the fact that I was upset? Oh my... He would regret it.

I'm not judging Jada personally for not reacting the same way I would have.

I also truly didn't find the joke to be insulting. She may still have been offended and I have no right to argue that she shouldn't have been. Just an observation, GI Jane references in my view are more empowering than insulting. I wish she could have taken it from that perspective. She didn't. And I get it. I didn't lose my hair. I can't relate to her exact experience. But as someone who saw it and keeps hearing about it, those are just my random thoughts.

The Slap

Should Will Smith have slapped Chris Rock? No.

Should Chris Rock know better to talk trash about a black woman's hair considering he made a documentary about black women's relationship with their hair? Yes.

eta: the movie is Good Hair. Humorous and educational. A good 90mins spent.

Should Jada have gotten on Will's ass? No. She's not his mother and chastising your partner should be off limits.

Do I think those actions are indicative of who Will Smith is? No. Will Smith was twenty minutes away from collecting an Oscar for a project he headed up at every stage. A life's work moment.

Chris totally ruined that moment for both Smiths. Will for the achievement and Jada cheering on someone she loves.

Is this a media cycle desperate for content? Holy fuck yes!

The language used makes me uncomfortable. Like, way too eager to rip the footing out from under Will Smith.

Each report doubles down on phrasing to exaggerate an implied level of violence and aggression that simply wasn't there. Yes, smacking the taste out of someone's mouth is an act of physical aggression...but nobody was actually harmed.

He smacked Chris Rock. That's it. No blood shed. No permanent damage. No weapons. Chris Rock doesn't want to press charges. Honestly, without social media this would be a non issue.

The whole narrative has some ugly connotations when bounced off where Burgerland is politically.

The Slap Heard Around The World...

My feelings. Will Smith was 100% in the wrong.

The joke wasn't funny, especially given the context of Jada's alopecia (which I don't believe he knew about), but it wasn't Ricky Gervais level insulting either.

Jada would have been questioned about her eye roll later by the media - she is articulate and could have made Chris look very small indeed by communicating how he made her feel.

Will Smith is a comedian, he could have heckled him. Instead he resorted to violence against a much smaller man. Would he have slapped The Rock? I don't think so.

It's not acceptable when kids in the playground respond to an insult with a smack and it certainly isn't acceptable when an adult does it. This wasn't another man threatening her safety, it was an unfunny joke that reflected worse on Chris Rock than it did her. Until Will Smith's display ensured he looked worse than anyone. He ruined his own big night.

FWIW Jada had publicly proclaimed prior to The Slap that she loves her shaved head and doesn't care what anyone thinks. It doesn't make the joke any funnier, but for me the issue is physical violence in response to words you don't like.

I don't think his completely disproportionate response was just about the "joke" but I'm not opening that can of worms.

There are sincerely good people here.

Thank you guys for the perspective. Needed it. Appreciating always.

Eta... I should have taken more time to phrase my initial post. Shame on me for saying "she should have". I could have simply said "I would have, but I understand that she's not me".

I had to look up the slap, man Will Smith is dumb. But also I dunno I mean it was a bad joke in poor taste at the expense of her alopecia. Ughh

Anyway here's some MTG bullshit craziness. I can't believe I share a last name with this freaking freakshow of a human. I swear, I don't know if she's real. She's gotta be a ... not real person because I can't abide by someone like her existing

There is zero chill on spice levels at my fav Indian restaurant.

Medium = mayonnaise with an ice cube garnish

Hot = 1 bajillion Scoville units massaged into the eyeball.

Like, my constricting airways sent a condolence bouquet to my butthole.

a judge who sentences with thought and consideration, and within established limits is NOT supporting pedos, and neither are people who can reach across an aisle to actually do their fn jobs.

As one of the Chosen Space Laser People, I’m sorry is been in disrepair and we haven’t taken MGT and her ilk out yet.

And to the slap, greet, now all the racists are talking about how black folks can’t behave.

I think that a person, while close to the butt of the joke, chose to exhibit violence over his intelligence, and act in typical toxic masculinity ways.

It was Jada who had the (honor, not legal) right to slap Chris Rock, if anyone, and she chose not to exercise it.

Will unintentionally enforced that women need a man to protect them.
Fuck that.

I will never go to any awards ceremony ever again. I've been to the Grammy's twice, and the second time only because he begged me.

Not only is everyone there so full of themselves, but they're paranoid as hell, high as a kite, and the anxiety level is off the charts. And that's not just the nominees. The performers are basket cases knowing that their peers will be judging every single note they sing or play.

I was mistaken for a performer at after parties, and when I was found out to be "just a partner" I was disposed of unceremoniously. They have no use for common folk. And guess what? I feel the same about them.

If Will Smith hadn't slapped Chris Rock I would never have known the Academy Awards was on.

That Will Smith Academy Awards slap on Chris Rock has received so much coverage, you'd think it was up there with legendary fisticuffs like Muhammed Ali vs. Joe Frazier. I would sooner have my fingernails ripped-off than sit in front of a TV and look at that insipid Oscar show, but I guess some people enjoy it.

After I watched videos of Will Smith's slap in slow motion I have big questions. Number one, why didn't Chris Rock's face show any damage afterward? No bruising or swelling? Is that the biggest open-handed haymaker Will Smith's got? Number two, Smith's smug expression on his walk back to his seat was so filled with dramatic self-satisfaction as to be suspicious. Lastly, Chris Rock immediately turned the other cheek and urged people to move-on. Might the whole thing have been an elaborate ruse to resuscitate the Academy Awards? Critics reported that show's ratings have fallen lower recently than the days of Celebrity Boxing with Danny Bonaduce.
