The Start. Mobility and Flexibility.

Most of my youth and younger adulthood, I’ve been active, and to a certain extent, I’ve excelled at athleticism, aerobics, and I’ll humbly acknowledge, dancing.

However, that part of my life started to dwindle once I started the chapter of my 30s. Active life slowed down and a more sedentary lifestyle crept up. I started noticing my knees would get sore frequently. And I just wasn’t moving my body in the manner that was optimal for a peaked physique.

Yea, I was lean and my metabolism was still on fire, but consistent stretching, flexibility exercises and mobility technique was drastically missing from my life. That continued for the better part of 15 years, simple measly gym workouts, where I had no set game plan, making mediocre gains, zero instruction and was aimlessly going through the motions.

Two and a half years ago, when the world flipped and the reset started, those perils really began the catalyst which created a tear in the fabric of my reality and projected me into this new found revelation on what really mattered to me at this point in life; major self reflection on how would I possibly begin to live my best life, now that I’m pushing 50 and how can I possibly control my reality when the outside reality was literally suffocating everyone? Liberties being lost all types of ways.

Once I stepped out of that cloud and realized that peaked and optimal fitness goals, including health and aesthetics were what I wanted as a great part of my mature years; tunnel vision became paramount and I knew then my destined trajectory.

To start this mindset, I had to slowly get my mobility and flexibility primed. Joints and unused or atrophied muscles needed to wake up and get use to work again and my lower back, ankles and feet needed to get trained for motion. I slowly got back into jogging and eventually was able to do a comfortable 5k pretty easily.

Did you know that the squat position should be the easiest thing for a person to get themselves into? And yet, most aren’t able. Even sitting with the legs crossed, most men, at my age aren't able.

Basic squat technique exercises and stretching became my starter course, even some yoga. I also buckled down and hired a trainer to help with focus, innovation and motivation on a weekly basis. So far, It’s been about two years of consistent training and I’ve come a very long way as far as correct squat position and getting my ankles and calves loose. It’s still a constant challenge.

Key Point: Practice sitting in a squat position, relaxed, and heels planted flat on the ground, for a set amount of time. Do that daily, anytime you can. Also, start a serious daily stretching regime. Stretch as much as you can, daily. I can’t say it enough. No physical goals can be made if one isn’t even able to squat or dynamically stretch effectively.

Motion is Lotion!
