Call me cynical but I always felt his photoshoots for gay magazines in his younger days was a way of getting the attention of and signalling a degree of willingness to some of the chickenhawks in Hollywood and surprise surprise he was cast by Bryan Singer twice.
It's actually how Channing Tatum got his start, some horny woman casting director saw his thirst photos and the rest is history lol. Back in the day, Channing really had some risque photos out there
It's now moved to Instagram. Hopefuls banking on some gay man or woman casting director, agent, etc. taking an interest. A big example of this is Tyler Perry casting of Brock O'Hurn. Tyler got wind of Brock’s Instagram success and hired him for one of his TV shows. It's similar to the way he hired Aaron O’Connell for The Haves and the Have Nots. His precious work had been nothing more than a damn Liquid Plumr commercial lol. I think Tyler was smitten by both. Hell he even paid for Aaron O'Connell's wedding.
If you look at some of the folks who have been cast in any of Tyler Perry latest projects. Most now come from Instagram

Oh totally. That shoot got Bryan Singer’s attention for sure. It was a multi page in the magazine as well which is unusual so I wouldn’t be surprised that Ben’s “people” paid extra for that. It’s a shame his acting went down like a lead balloon.
Do you think a subtle form of casting couch audition took place when he flew over to Hollywood to meet Bryan Singer for talks in 2014?
