You right but I think both of them were not 100% honest. From the beginning, Chad must have commented to Lane about how he felt in that relationship with Leo, but it was always seen that he "supported" them and defended them. Lane should have been honest with Chad when he started to feel strong feelings for Leo and explore that feeling together.

Why would Lane make things public? Leo is Lane's gateway to certain places in NY scene. Right now, it's perfect for Lane. He doesn't have to publicly acknowledge anything with Leo, date/bang other people, and he still gets to make connections with certain influential people in NY scene with the help of Leo.
