At the risk of tossing a dry forest into a burning ember (as happened in Cape Town last week and left the bottom half of table mountain bare), let me place a little perspective.
(Can't believe it looks like I'm defending circumcision).
Here is the reality - at least one of the major tribes in South Africa (the Xhosa, who boast two black presidents out of three, Mandela and Mbeki), has circumcision as their rite to manhood shortly after puberty, and it goes back as long as they know. Two of my college educated buddies went through it, and I had some discussion with them. The incentive to do so seems to be that their dads and older brothers get them laid once they are circumcised to prove that they are men.
As a 14 year old boy (I'm not, mods), would you choose to have the end of your cock sliced off by a sharp rock or be a virgin, or not be a man, and not able to get laid by your tribe. This is the decision these young dudes face.
I think it is horrendous, but I don't think a white boy from Montreal has any idea of the complexities of this issue in south africa.
When South African doctors figure out how to solve a very relevant problem in my own home country - you go girl. And well done on saving penises when you can.
I think it is horrendous that circumcision still exists as a tribal activity, but it does. and that is for the Xhosa to figure out (and good luck with the Jews).
South Africa is looking at damage control and encouraging circumcision in sanitary environments rather than rocks on mountaintops.
