This video brightened my day:

Unknown, unemployed, frumpy, middle-aged Suan Boyle auditioning for "Britain's Got Talent". 47-years-old. Singing "I Dreamed a Dream" from "Les Miserable" - and left the judges stunned & speechless.

She says she lives alone with just her cat Pebbles for company, and: ‘I’ve never had a boyfriend. I’ve never even been kissed.’

This was lovely Will, my Mum and Dad even stopped reading the papers and took notice....

And the middle aged dancer Fabia Cerra...now that was hilarious!

P.S. Will....believe it or not her performance of 'I dreamed a dream' made headline news in Australia!! With all the doom and gloom and cynicism about..... this was so uplifting!

I thought I hated Broadway musicals, but that's actually a wonderful song with great lyrics.

And of course she was awesome. It's nice to hear someone on one of these shows just sing like a normal person, instead of doing all that Mariah Carey-derived quavering and wailing, stretching every word into about 38 syllables.

I'm with you with that "stretching every word into about 38 syllables" Mariah Carey thing: although sometimes Ms. Carey has her charms.... though she loses it at the end of almost every song with the quivering, wailing, stretch-every-word sludge: YouTube - oh holy night mariah carey

It also made national news in Canada. What a gift she has! Les Miserables is my favourite stage production. I had a tear in my eye listening to her incredible voice. I don't think she will be unemployed very long. Love him or hate him, Simon Cowell has a keen eye for talent and is a shrewd businessman. I'll bet he had her signing a contract before the show had ended! Good for her - I'll be the first to buy her CD when it comes out.

This is what I love about Simon Cowell's talent shows. Particularly the Britain's Got Talent format. People out of nowhere show up and blow everyone away. Consider Paul Pott's, ex mobile phone salesmen, Leona Lewis, ex receptionist, and now Susan Boyle.

Not to show up your OP offering, I submit 12 y/o Faryl Smith from BGT 2007. Listen to this despite the bad quality, and then this one to see how young she is.

Then there is 11 year old Bianca Ryan from America's Got Talent. She is a bit less subtle than Faryl, amazing nonetheless. This one, too.

Thanks for the Susan Boyle post. I love this kind of stuff.

I second your thoughts....

Nice too see something pleasant and uplifting every once in a while. :)

Holy Shit! What is this woman doing anywhere other than a West End theater? She's astonishing and actually sings that song better than Paige.

I'm blown away! Beautiful gift that woman has.

One of my dearest friends for over 20 years is the sort of singer that transfixes you. When she sings, you can't move, you can't think, you can just listen. Her voice is truly heaven sent. She's well trained and has done some amazing local performances. As she puts it "Plain Jane doesn't get signed no matter how good".

I imagine if Miss Boyle were to audition, they'd love her, but might overlook her because she's not "pretty enough for the front row seats" as we say back home. Sadly, they are more likely to sign a model type with a good voice than a "Plain Jane" with a incredible voice.
