Coming out

I did it at age 21 with my friends one at a time. Same with family members. In my opinion, a "group sit down" lacks an appropriate amount of intimacy that the topic deserves. Just remember, this effects you much more than it will them. Even if someone reacts negatively, they usually come around in a couple of years so try to think well of them. Good luck!

Thank you all for your input.

Why do you feel the need to get everyone to sit down and listen to a speech and so on?

Well my reasoning for this is that we are a pretty close family and I feel that would be the ideal way. Now I'm not talking getting my whole family tree in on the matter. Just my parents and siblings.

Honestly I think I'm thinking too much about it. I need to just let go, relax and stop trying to pick the "perfect moment." As someone stated above, there is no such thing.

I did it in person with my parents, and on the phone with my brother.

When we are ready to come out, our closed ones, especially parents, are not necessarily ready. I think it's nice to be in the same room as them and let them know we are fine, happy and that they should not worry. Crack a joke if you can and don't make a big deal out of it, because it's not :). So many countries officially support us now, we are almost normal, whatever that means !

Be brave, you will feel so much better once you are done with that part!

O.P., you haven't exactly said this but it seems you may want to tell everyone at once so as to avoid those who learn later or second hand feeling like they mattered less to you. Could be wrong but if true it's a nice sentiment.
How are you expecting various family members will respond? Sometimes it's "We were wondering when you would tell us" and in other cases it sets up a huge family brawl. If you suspect the latter, I suggest lining up your allies first. If you reasonably expect everyone to be cool then timing and setting are less of an issue although it would probably be good to choose a time that would allow for sufficient discussion.

So I think it time that I finally fess up to my true feelings and let the REAL Me be known. I have gotten to the point where I want to let my family and close friends know that while I find women attractive, I am attracted to men more. In other words, I'm gay. And while on this site I have considered myself bisexual, I have a yearning for men. I think women are amazing and beautiful but deep down inside it just doesn't do it for me. So I feel that it is time for me to let it out. I know that my immediate family will be totally ok about it. I have a sibling that is gay and the love is still there. My parents always taught us to love and except people for who they are and not to judge them. I have always been the type of person to preach about being who you are and not worrying about what others will think or say, but I guess that is easier said than done. I feel I never came out before because I knew that meant I could lose friends, be judged and I don't think I was ready for that. Now as I am about to get another year older, I feel that it's the right right time to truly be myself and to take my own advise to not worry what others will think.

I hope I did not bore any of you with this story. I needed a free space where I could express myself.

If you speak with as much confidence and clarity as you write, you will capture your audience. You sound like you've already written your persuasive argument. Good luck!

It's never too late... I'm 58, and last weekend told my brother I now have someone in my life, and that someone happens to be a man! My brother was very happy for me that I have someone to love!
I never felt there was a need to "come out". I don't believe it is an issue. Times are changing, and hopefully one day, in the near future, it will be as accepted to have a same sex partner as it is to have an opposite sex partner. If straight people made as big a deal of coming out straight, then, and only then, would I think it necessary for gay's to do the same. However, each to their own.. Do what YOU feel is best for you, not what you think is expected... Good luck to you!!! Sounds like you have a wonderful family.

Hey Luv: Congratulations.

I think Dave_NoCal gave you good advice. I brought my family together for a meeting when I came out. We were all planning to go to dinner and I just asked everybody to show up at my mother's house beforehand for a "family meeting." I had told a sister who is very close to me and she said nothing to the rest of my family. She was my backup.

I was prepared for a big reaction, lots of questions about my girlfriends, friends, etc.

It didn't happen. My brothers and sisters looked at each other and said, "We thought you had cancer. Where are we going for dinner?"

That doesn't happen all the time, but I think it is more the norm than the exception.

Good Luck, Luv. You will be fine. You are doing what is right for you and for your family.

Let us know how it goes.
