Conan gray

Conan made a couple of somewhat gay-shame-y comments a few years ago. However, he was really young. Other than that, I’m perfectly fine with the way he’s handled things. It’s been obvious as hell he’s fairly queer/is in the gender, sexual, affection, romantic, emotion, commitment spectrum. He hasn’t gone out of his way to come off “straight” or hetero-leaning. Yet, he also isn’t trying too hard to aim for queer appeal. And he at least doesn’t appear to be playing any wink-wink games/keep people guessing for persona and publicity games. He’s handling things very respectfully. So, there’s no need to push him or try to shame him.

If the way he moves is in part due to him trying to get to a level of success or trying to appease someone then that’s unfortunate. But we’ve yet to see evidence of that. Folks still don’t get that public figure or not, everyone has a right to privacy and have their own journeys.

Sean Hayes played the most overtly “gay” and flaming dude on TV for years and still was a bit self-conscious about being publicly out and admitted he was worried about his career and about how folks perceived him. The male ego is a trip, even for the most overtly queer guys and especially when you’re young. While you never know someone’s journey or struggles or exact dimensions. As long as someone isn’t being messy or problematic or manipulative or leach-like, the “official coming out” pressures need to die.

i know i’m late to this convo but he’s obviously queer/ unlabelled. he flirts with dudes in one of his recent music videos and says « don’t give a fuck about labels » in one of his songs. Like…. why are we talking about him « coming out yet » like he didn’t already??

not everyone identifies as bi/gay/pan some people don’t use labels and it’s fine. but please don’t say he’s straight or in the closet bc that’s wrong

There’s some slight problems with this perspective though. Ambiguity and “I don’t believe in labels” are starting to be mainstream selling points, and they’ve always been a way to maintain hetero appeal or a way to appear more “queer” than you are or a way to conceal internalized phobias, queer insecurities, gay resentments. It’s a fine line between endorsing manipulation or shame, and not pushing “labels”, giving people their due privacy, allowing folks to go on their own journeys as far as confidence, sense of self, psychology, the gender, sexual, affection, romantic, emotion, commitment spectrum. It’s a more nuanced conversation than most here are willing to admit. However, claiming that he’s “closeted” or has to embrace some public identity is not the appropriate.

Yeah he’s definitely in the queer spectrum. He gives enough hints in a lot of his videos. The video for Checkmate was basically him getting revenge on two people he either was in a relationship with or was wanting TO be in a relationship in.

he’s never said he was straight

exactly this, we know he’s queer it’s just people who want people to come out that irks me. let people live as they may and love who they want without explaining anything to y’all.
He’s one of those that DON’T really have to make a statement. He just IS.

It’s a difficult conversation because I’m starting to see a ton of guys say they’re “attracted to people not gender” and don’t want to be labeled but then pretty much only ever show interest in women. So there’s obviously guys that do feel that way but in the back of my mind I often wonder if a lot of these dudes are saying that because it’s “trendy”. I do believe Conan is definitely not straight though.

I was soooooo not a fan of this discourse with Harry Styles (he /has/ to have gotten head from a guy or two, right?) at first, but more and more, I get it. Especially since he's started to think he can criticize queer art.

Conan is absolutely not the same case because no matter his identity, he's walked the walk at least in his public persona. Where I dislike it is that it's allowing almost certainly hetero guys to claim a level of queerness that they don't actually feel in their hearts.

Hopefully there will be a time where it is totally irrelevant and no longer a basis of discrimination, but until then, it is muddy in a way I very much dislike.

Conan probably dealt with trauma/homophobia growing up around how ppl in his close circle view queer people or there opinions on it. Explains his aversion to labels.

The brave ones for me are Troye and Nas

no label's perfect, but no one is so special that there isn't a single label that can describe their sexuality...

i'm pretty sure that boy likes the D (I could be wrong but I doubt it)
whether or not he likes the V too remains to be seen

Things can get (or they can feel) more complicated if you experience degrees of fluidity or contradictions or questioning when it comes to sexual dimensions or where you are in the gender, sexual, affection, romantic, emotion, commitment spectrum. That can often make people, particularly males, be more hesitant. Then there’s of course internalized phobias, family pressure, mental health struggles, and the assumptions people make about your dimensions depending on the identities you embrace or don’t. So, identities are whatever to me. They’re practical, and I understand their importance for many. But they’re not the be-all when it comes to confidence, self-comfort, self-understanding or loving/being with who you want.

you can just say so though instead of dodging the question :D
