In terms of physical appearance, I think others are right - "cute" frequently seems to = young/younger. For me, "cute" would refer to basic looks/attitude, "handsome" would be commenting on a man's overall appearance (looks, grooming, maybe even what he's wearing), "hot" is more overtly sexual.

Cute is used solely to describe actions/behavior, too, not just looks. I can say "awww, that's cute when you do that" to a guy but I wouldn't say "awww, that's handsome when you do that."
