How much has the American Diet changed over the years? What did you eat as a kid that you would never dream of eating today?

Here's my typical diet when I was a kid.... Scary.

Captain Crunch Cereal (or other sugarpacked cereal)
w/ Whole Milk
Tang

Bologna Sandwich on Wonder Bread w/ mayo and mustard
Twinkie or Ding Dong
Orange colored sugar drink in plastic container w/foil lid.
Apple or Banana

Macaroni and Velveta Cheese
Pot Roast, Liver & Onions, Meatloaf or some other beef dish.
Whole Milk
Vegetable
Bisquick Biscuits w/butter
Ice Cream
Coke (occasionally)
or
Frozen Dinners

Looking back, this is a recipe for diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure combined, a low fiber, high fat, high cholesterol, high refined starch, high refined sugar diet.

If most Americans ate like me there is no wonder why health costs are so high and we are such a fat society. I'm not sure how typical this diet was but in retrospect it amazes me that I ate so poorly but I think many people did.

Have you seen the latest statistics for diabetes especially Type II? How about hypertension, heart disease, just to name a few.

I know of a person who went on a diet. This person is in her 50's. When her weight dropped to what the doctor wanted, nearly all of her symptoms went away. Her medications for high blood pressure, fluid pills thyroid pills and other pills were discontinued.

I don't eat the best diet and I am paying for it. Overweight and on too many medications.

Earl...did you live in my house?
You must have since we ate the same things.
You aren't my brother using a pseudonym are you? I hope not, since I certainly would hate to think that I've been lusting after my own brother!

However, I liked my Bologna sandwiches with peanut butter, a little mayo and mustard, and topped with thick slices of onions. Sometimes I added slices of garlic dill pickles...or sardines, or subtituted anchovies for the sardines. Ummmm Good!

I also, liked Moon Pies (and RC Cola) along with the Ding Dongs and Twinkies.

Oh how I loved mac and cheese and meatloaf....Meatloaf sandwiches are
still my favorite meat sandwich...after Bologna, that is!

My university roommate was an Astronaut and he said they indeed drank Tang. So, it is really true!

buddy, how did we live through it?

LMAO. Silver- I have no idea how we are alive now. I had a feeling I wasn't the only kid who ate like this. lol.

Moon Pies! Oh, what sweet memories. Remember Sno-Balls? I had an addiction to the pink ones.

I forgot to add to my regualar diet:

Spaghetti-o's
Top Ramen
Pop Tarts
Pez
Kool Aid
Jimmy Dean sausage
Rasberry Jello
Oreo Cookies
Canned vegetables
Doritos

So astronauts really did drink Tang. It must have induced constipation - advantageous in space.

I used to buy Tang to feed to my guinea pigs. They are the only creatures on Earth, other than humans, who don't create their own Vitamin C. So does that mean I could have launched those rodents into space?

I hope the regular diet is not your present on...we both should eat better than that. Occasional laps are okay though to just keep sane!

Are you sure we aren't brothers that were separated long ago? lol

And......I like the pink ones too! There used to be a saying among the "boys" that if you ate the pink ones on Thursday...that meant you were queer! Wearing a green shirt on Thursday, too What a laugh! I always ate the pink ones and wore a green shirt on Thursdays just to get a rise out ot them....they all jeered and heckled me...we all laughed...BUT, little did they know! I was the one really laughing my guts out inside!

Saturday mornings, for me and my s/o now a days, has to be started with a breakfast of Jimmy Dean sausage (make my own patties from the roll...not the links), soft scrambled eggs with a bit of cheese sprinkled on top, hash browns with onions and green peppers (and sometimes garlic is added for his Italian taste), and big Bisquick biscuits with butter. Ummmmmm Good! I used to drink coffee, but now I drink tea.

About an hour ago, I just made 2 packages of Rasberry Jello (I like Royal brand best) with Mandarin Orange pieces sirred in. That will be enjoyed tonight with a bit of thick Greek Yogurt on top.

The next time I talk to my friend, I will ask him if he got constiated in space by drinking the Tang.

Eh... ate all that stuff.. but in moderation, still do... always been in great shape, no blood pressure issues, etc...

I'd rather die at 64 enjoying myself, than eat rice cakes and vegan comestibles and lwind up just looking kinda "off" (color, skin, hair wise.. you know what I mean) and live till 65 and get hit by a bus.

I drink tap water too, and save $500/year.

Yikes!!! I never ate that way, and I have absolutely no disease.

Cosmonauts/space station attendees drink their own urine... for what it's worth.

I asked him about that, too. It is recycled into drinkable water.
He said they didn't even think about it and that it tasted just like water.

For me it was coffee milk, Captain Crunch or Crunch Berry cereal.

My parents drank a Louisianna type French espresso, using a combination of coffee and chickory which they ground fresh every morning. It was so thick and bitter that to this day that is the only type coffee I like. But, they used to put a tsp full in a cup of hot milk for me. Just that tsp full was enough to have me "wired" for an hour or two. :biggrin1: I haven't thought about that for years! Thanks, Osiris, for the memory jolt!

I ate just awful as a kid. Mostly Kraft macaroni and cheese and TV dinners. My mom just didn't have time to cook. We had a lot of soda and junk food too.

Completely different from my grandparents. They ate eggs, butter, beef 4-5 nights a week, and never had heart disease. My grandfather passed at 94 and my grandmother is 95. I'm convinced it was because my grandmother never cooked processed foods. Everything was from scratch, even cake icings. They were always active but not exercise fanatics.

My sister's father-in-law is a doctor of nutrition and I've had some amazing conversations with him about food. His biggest bugaboos are Aspartame, partially-hydrogenated fats, and high fructose corn syrup. Of them all, corn syrup is the one he considers the worst and has done a lot of research on the relationship between corn syrup and metabolic syndrome. He has no issues with cane sugar though of course that should be moderated like everything else. It's amazing how many foods contain high fructose corn syrup. Stay away from them.

Astronauts don't drink their own urine, I saw an astronaut say that with his very own non uring drinking mouth.

When we were kids we ate pretty well, lots of fruit and veg although there wasn't the variety in shops there is now, but the choice of cooking fat was lard.

No but Tang is really really bad for them...despite what you've been told. Enriched food is the way to go ;)

Of course they don't drink their own urine in that state! Of course it has been done by people in order to stay alive during unusual situations. It won't kill you if you did, just not exactually something that you would want to do.

Astronauts can only take so much in the way of water and supplies with them and the water and urine used while in space is treated and turned into potable water again. So, in a real sense, they do drink their own urine.

This is not something that is unknown. Do some research before making an substantuated statement in the future.
