However my (straight) roommate also looks a bit like him (he's tall as Drew) when he cuts his hair short, but unlike Drew my roommate has brown eyes and hair. I think Drew could be like a mix of both guys I know, and I like the idea hahahaha

I was thinking this based on everyone in the cast of Hellraiser (2022) being openly queer but him. Seemed like a deliberate choice by the director to cast queer actors
The devil is in the details... In the opening scene where Drew meets all the queer characters, he seems to shyfully greet Brandon's boyfriend as if they had met in the past. And even Brandon's character seems to initially distrust him. Read in between the lines and you have a possibly omitted storyline.
I dont think a director can ask actors if they are gay during auditions lol
It's actually illegal to do that. It'll be grounds of discrimination based on sexual orientation.
that's why the casting queer actors for queer roles debate is so complex. You definitively can't know what a person identifies as and asking them is somewhat unethical

True but I don't think a director would have to explicitly ask. They could send out a casting call for specifically queer actors or give openly queer ones priority in the casting process.
Or just cast established known queer actors that they are familiar with, in which a case asking wouldn't be necessary
Shooting on QUEER starts in late April to late June. Luca Guadagnino has an open casting call for LGBT+ dancers from Caribbean/Latin American countries and actors/extras with Latin American origins

Also in the book, his character Allerton isn't specified. He can pass for straight or bisexual depending on the reader. The whole book is about Daniel Craig's character Lee being obsessed with Allerton who doesn't reciprocate his feelings. Allerton seemingly has a girlfriend called Mary and talks about sleeping with women. All the sex that happens between Lee and Allerton in the book is transactional. Nowhere in the book does it say that Allerton has feelings/sexual desire for men. PS: I read the book it's quite tiny, don't think it's even 100 pages
it will all depend on how Luca and his scribe interprets it. He seems to have taken a lot of liberty in casting of the roles because in the novel, physically, Allerton is supposed to be a very thin young looking 21 year old twink who is still a boy. From what I understood more of like a Jack Dylan Grazer or even a Timothee Chalamet. How Luca read him as a hot jock, I don't know
Daniel Craig's character Lee who the book focuses on, is very very vile. He has very deep internalised homophobia especially towards effeminate men. He is also severely racist, he views and looks down upon the Latino countries he visits(like I mean he is very very racist, not like it's even subtle). He also has scenes fantasising about slave trade and genocide. These all serves a purpose, I might add.
The book has a lot of literary merit but I would suggest you pass because it'll probably leave a very bad taste in your mouth. Unless you're in the headspace for it to critically engage with it(which I wasn't). It definitely isn't a romantic sensual drama like Call me by your name it's more of like The Power of the Dog if it was inside Phil's head

I guess Luca didn't wanna stretch it with yet another Chalamet collaboration this soon but yeah I think it wound have interesting to see someone like Grazer or Finn Wolfhard in this role
Maybe cos they look like children next to Daniel Craig and maybe that's how it is in the books but enough gross age gaps
