When you sign up, you sign up for a predetermined amount of time. Typically between 2 to 6 years. Depends on the branch and other factors.

All branches you sign an 8 year contact.
Most are 4 years active duty, and 4 years inactive reserves.
Once you sign up, you are stuck until you get kicked out or finish your contract.
