Maybe when it comes to guns or other conservative aspects of life (he comes from the red midwest), but when it comes to politics he’s spoken out against Trump, even went to a fund-raiser for Pete Buttigieg. He’s pretty woke, not the “alt-right weirdo” you imply. I loathe Trump/Republicans but even I have some friends who are conservative; I like to think I can slowly have an educational effect on them. Did they not only know each other for a few weeks before he left for the army?? As for the note, there is nothing sincere about it. It's an attention grab, if he meant it, he would have sent it privately. If it's not for attention, it's a grand gesture, like when you buy presents for your partner to hide cheating guilt.
