It was this exactly. Something like if he really had to be accurate he'd say he was pan, but it's more convenient to say gay because he prefers guys.

sexuality isn't that concrete or set in stone. Your attraction and taste can definitely change over time. that doesn't make him some kind of liar or whatever

Yeah, I'm not clear on the problem. Dylan can be criticized for quite a few things, he's no paragon of virtue, but he's some stripe of queer. It isn't your business to police his sexual orientation.
Also, as I said, and was confirmed, he used gay as a shorthand, but really pan or bi was closer to the truth for him. That's cool.
