If Mark wants Ethan back, he'll have to start showing a sexier and freakier side of himself.
I cannot say for certain why they parted ways, but based on what I've what I've seen from Ethan and what I've seen from Mark, Ethan is a Rachel (wild, fun and free) and Mark is a Ross (clean, polished and dry). And just like Ross and Rachel, Ethan and Mark have danced the on-again-off-again tango more than once, but unlike the show where the couple presumably live happily ever after, at this point, disco has a better chance of making a comeback than the love between Mark and Ethan.
It's very obvious that Ethan doesn't want a schoolboy who sings in the church choir, but a bad boy who pulls his hair while he rails him from behind. The way I see it, Mark has a choice: Move on with his life without Ethan being a part of it, or change his core character to bait Ethan back.
I know this isn't at all the point of your comment but...Ross and Rachel only ever broke up once, and didn't (ostensibly) get back together until the very end of the last episode

They officially broke up once, but they were also "on a break" at one point where Ross considered them broken up and free to explore other relationships, whereas Rachel considered them still together, just not lovey-dovey with each other for a while, but still exclusive to one another. It's literally an ongoing gag throughout the entire series as to who was in the right and who was in the wrong.
Stop saying stuff about how or why they'll get back together weirdos. You don't know what happened between them. It's been so long that they're apart. This thread was created to have them separately. If you don't have anything new about both of them don't mention them. Ethan is Ethan and Mark is Mark. They exist as singular beings. Now I saw the friends crossover

That’s all pretty much the same event…they were on a break for one night, then back together for like a single day until Rachel found out Ross slept with Chloe, the girl from the Xerox place, then they broke up, then “back together” for a single night until that GIF you posted, then off until the end of the show. I wouldn’t consider that “on again, off again.”
