What’s interesting is that I feel like we often lose track of how quickly time is passing. Even 5 years ago, they were already well onto their decline in popularity. They had already broken up by this point and had suffered from their own relationship issues (clearly) and also a decline in views/fans at the same time. I’d say their absolute peak as influencers/content creators was like 2014-2016 during the ‘boyfriend trip’ videos and the music festival montages etc. They were just exactly what we (gays growing up find ourselves) all wanted and thought we should be. To be honest there wasn’t a large platform for online sex work/OnlyFans during the time of Mark and Ethan’s peak online as a couple. That stuff started taking off big time when they were already declining. If they’d jumped on the bandwagon back then, sure they’d have made a lot more money (and possibly gone back up in popularity), but I’m happy they each forged their own path and I’m assuming they are too.
Odd realization, but teen gays and younger twenties (maybe 22 and under) won’t even know who Mark and Ethan are, or have them to look up to during their own journey in finding themselves. Some of us watched Mark and Ethan all through highschool and college, so we were there when it all fell apart and now long after, but I bet it’ll be harder to discover and get into a couple that was popular ten years ago now.
