Wow. You have got a lot to learn about hosting a website. First of all, as a host, you have the ability to prevent people from hotlinking to pictures and multimedia -- if you're not a coder, get someone who is to show you how. You left your door wide open and are bitching because someone walked through it.

Second of all, if folks from LPSG can 'steal your bandwidth', then the spiders at Google and MSN and Yahoo may be doing it as well as they crawl the web and index your site. And if your videos are linked over Google, they'll find a much bigger audience than they would over LPSG.

Do your homework, and learn how to secure your site. 19 gigs of bandwidth is a cheap, cheap price to pay for this lesson.

Sir,
You are right I do have a great deal to learn about hosting a website, thankyou for the link. I will look and try and learn how to prevent this from happening again.
I can assure you it is not a pleasant feeling to be made to feel like the criminal in this sorry episode.
All I have ever wanted was to make a free place for people of a like mind to visit and share things, a tiny little community that is free where guys can find stuff they like. I am not making money, I am not a seasoned webmaster, just someone who is trying to provide something for free.
It seems that I have a very steep learning curve ahead of me, and I thank you for your help in giving me the link.

Yes, the owner has deleted/moved it. We'll all waiting for a new hotlink.

LPSG has been spammed with links to that site at least twice a month ever since I joined - and Pony9a always claimed he had nothing to do with it, but seemed to be OK with it. Now he comes here to bitch that one of his users linked to his site?

Not my problem dude!

Well, the first thing I thought was, "uh, dude, that a problem with your site, and your (lack of) security," which was later very well outlined by mindseye.
EDIT: spehling errer

Um, ok, in re-reading this, I'm struck with the thought... "So, the problem is...?" If you WANTED people to see it, and you WANTED it to be free, and you WANTED it to be for people of a like mind, then... mission accomplished.

The site's URL is in your signature, so you're clearly advertising it. What if, instead of following a hotlink, we all "legitimately" became members yesterday? It would've been the same amount of traffic, and the same result. What would you have done then? Would you still be angry, and at whom?

You know guys, I have been around lpsg.org for a few years now and registered for over 18 months.
LPSG has changed and not for the better.....I can see now why so many of the old members and moderators have shipped out.
This is now no longer a "support community" maybe it was caused by the exposure on tv, who knows? All I know is that lpsg has become a place where anyone is fair game for paid members to abuse, make fun of, treat with disrespect, and generally put down, particularly new members who may make the cardinal sin of asking a question that has been asked before..(God forbid.)
Whilst there are a few who actually enjoy making others feel bad and derive great pleasure from this activity, I am sure that many, many more members would post if they were not intimidated into staying silent by a small minority who seem to have cart'e blanche to say and do what they like on this board.
Maybe that is the way things are now, maybe the majority of members are more than happy to have it that way, I don't know, I cannot speak for them only myself.
I know that there are some of you who will interpret this as an attack, it is'nt, it is my dissappointment in what was a board I respected and enjoyed being destroyed and turned into something I do not recognise as the same place anymore.

Novice_btm,
I see the point you are trying to make, but it is extremely unlikely that 3,000 people would all register for the site at the same time.
I could cope with new members joining at a reasonable rate, I would upgrade the bandwidth or get a new server in order to cope.
It has already been established that I am a new website owner, I do have a lot to learn, I acknowledge that fact.
The point is, and I will defend it till the day that I die, "The person who hotlinked my website is the guilty party here" and no matter how you twist the words and try and shift the blame or try to make me look stupid, the facts are the facts.
Hotlinking to another persons website is not a nice thing to do and not tolerated by most websites. If he wanted to share the video he could have used rapidshare or something similar, there was no need to hotlink to the entire gallery.

Your attitude stinks and now you've alienated an entire site of people just so you could feel vindicated. I suggest you learn how to react to things like a grown up before venturing out into the net and giving stuff for free. You could have handled this maturely instead of petulently. I feel for your bandwidth but you did put yourself out there as giving away free porn.

I agree that sharing it through a service like RapidShare would have been preferrable. However, you can't expect your users to have the same level of technical ability as you do (and you got a website up and running, so you must know something about how it all works).

You have to protect your resources (bandwidth, CPU, memory, and disk space) from your users, even if that means shutting down your website. A properly configured web server serves up 403 errors when people attempt to leech from the site (the referrer header doesn't match the website's address) and 401 errors when anonymous users access protected content. Either one of those measures would have solved this issue before it ever started.

Look, I'm not trying to attack you, I'm just trying to point out a few holes in the logic, as *I* see them, and I could be wrong. Also, as Tall pointed out, it was more in your approach to the problem that I think caused people to jump all over any of it. If you would've just moved the file, told the guy that it's not cool, and what it was doing to your bandwidth, I think everyone would've completely glossed over the whole thing. Just as YOU admit to being a beginner as a host, the user could be a beginner also, and have NO idea that what he did was "wrong", "uncool", etc. Should he have just downloaded it once, then shared it via RapidShare, or some other site equipped for just that purpose? Sure. Did he KNOW that? All we see on this side is that you jumped all over someone, for what COULD be just as honest of a "mistake" as you not having security. And as the host, of any kind of service, tact, politeness,. and understanding, are always important.

Spot on Novice. I didnt even think that the original linker might not have even thought it was not a good idea. He thought it was free and wanted to share. Hell, I could have done the same thing.

This is the last thing I will post on this board...:disappointed:
The user had enough knowledge to be able to hotlink from another website and therefore obviously knows that it is a wrong thing to do.
My attitude does not "stink" it is entirely justified and I doubt that there is a website owner or "decent" person on this planet who would say otherwise.
The "stink" around here is coming from people who for thier own reasons have decided that they are the judge and jury and that what they think is far more important than honesty and justice.
I therefore present to you this bunch of flowers as a farewell gesture...:flowers1:
May they take away the stench of corruption and injustice that has permeated this entire thread.
I am saddened by this whole episode and wish I had never heard of this website let alone registered here.

He pasted a link, that's it. A dog could do it. It requires no special ability or secret knowledge.

That's right, don't acknowledge any personal shortcomings, just lash out and blame others.

the stench of corruption

Get a sense of fucking perspective that stretches beyond your own perceived importance. And now piss off.
