Generator isn't too bad but I agree, some of the suggestions for places in Italy or Spain and when you look them up, almost 50% of the reviews are negative and mention safety, hygiene or bedbug issues.

Sure there are going to be worse, but for a regular backpacker, why would they book a hostel that's rated 7 on Hostel World, and 3.6 on Google Maps over one that's 8+/4+? They used to be the cheapest option, and can possibly justify the rating, but that's not even true anymore.

Well, I wouldn't expect hostels where guys jerk off in the rooms and hook up in the showers to get raving reviews from non-horny travelers.. for the activities that we are after, these tend to happen in the less than pristine hostels due to the fact that people don't care.. the super clean and best reviewed hostels are starting to look like mini hotels, so less chances for mischief.

And yes, I think the hostel culture is dying. Even though there is a cost-of-living crisis, it seems that people who can afford to travel, prefer to spend a bit more on where they are staying. So the youngsters who travel are moe likely staying in airbnbs and cheap hotels, since many of the cheaper hotels in London are priced the same-ish level as some of the hostels.. Generator is still offering unbeatable prices though, I routines pay 20-30 pounds a night when I stay there, nothing can beat that..

And also it seems like (younger) people are becoming more shy and prude, on average? That is a behaviour I observe. And the supply follows the demand - there is more clothing in spas and baths that used to be nudist, communal showers are being rebuilt into cubicles, more and more dorm beds have curtains etc. So staying in a separate room fits into that too.

Lots of male only dorms as well as a male only hostel . Stayed at Archeo a number of times . Probably 20+ nights in total and saw about 4 guys in total in their underwear and finally one guy naked.
