I Will Admit...

I'd like to see someone produce a version of the Bible with all the scientific ignorance, violence, genocide, patriarchy and historical lies removed.

So . . . You’d like one of those journals with blank pages with The Holy Bible printed in gilt lettering on the front?

NCbear (who couldn’t resist ;) —and who admits that yes, I am a preacher’s son )

I didn't (and still don't) like Princess Diana. I appreciate the symbolism of her shaking hands with an AIDS patient (her finest hour, in my opinion) and the charity work she did, I also think the paparazzi were terrible in chasing her through the tunnel. I was also angry with them for that. And it certainly was Charles (don't like him either, but that's another story) who started off the chain of infidelity.

But I have a very low opinion of aristocrats who spent their whole lives with a golden spoon in their mouths, and yet have no academic ability whatsoever (I think she achieved a single O level in Domestic Science, and that's despite going to one of the most prestigious schools in the UK, something very few could dream of, let alone go there and squander it). I remember distinctly in the mid to late nineties, how she would turn up to minefields, prance around them and bugger off after five minutes, and then the newspaper headlines would all be about how saintly she was and not about how cruel it is that people in poorer parts of the world are having their legs blown off and dying because of these vile weapons. For someone who kept protesting about how much she disliked being stalked by the paparazzi, she seemed to spend a lot of time courting them and enjoying the spotlight they gave her.

That I sometimes will start writing a reply to a thread, get halfway through, then get distracted by something else (gaming, having a spliff with flatmates, or watching series) and completely forget to post my response.

I will admit that I’m impressed by the upgrades this site has gone through. From having Dark Mode available, to the SFW viewing and even suggesting similar threads below reach thread that’s already open - so much work went I into this upgrade and it shows! :)

I will admit to a gnawing ennui that besieges my soul as the night steals in.
Why am I always doing 'stuff'?
But never my stuff?
And now the gate is closing . . .
Three years tops.

Hi @ConanTheBarber I was bothered by that while I was employed full time, but I didn’t realise it until I retired. Now whatever I do I what I want to do. It feels different. There is a modern concept called downscaling, which means minimising your consumption to reduct the amount you have to work for others. It’s popular among “Baters” who are committed to a solo sex lifestyle. I’m beginning to explore this for myself and enjoying letting go of mental stress. Take care.

You know, I'm doing all of this, and not really letting more congenial circumstances allow me to fall into self-expression, as though I am ambivalent about whether further self-expressive effort has further point.
But I still teach and write reasonably well, by reports.
I think I'm just coming to terms with mortality, its inexorable approach, and the unremitting acceleration, subjectively, with which it approaches.
Twenty years ago, for example, I was living in Hong Kong.
It seems about a week ago.
And ain't no actuary with even three cerebral wrinkles who'd give me 20 years of breathing from here.
And so I have to learn to stretch the actual, infinitesimal, and infinitively numerous passing moments of perception as far as they naturally go.
Which means basically to pay attention.
More than that, no can do.
Damn.

Hey I get it. Twenty years ago I was living in Egypt and was forced to return home by the fallout of 9/11, so that 20yr anniversary made it all seem just like yesterday for me.

Minimalism should be about minimising distractions. You're so right:

"And so I have to learn to stretch the actual, infinitesimal, and infinitively numerous passing moments of perception as far as they naturally go.

This is the benefit of mindfulness. Eg: sometimes I pause and look at the sky until I notice the movement of the clouds. This slows down my mental activity and helps me appreciate the moment.

I applaud your approach to mortality - by paying attention to the details now, the years we have left will be happier and time won't seem so limited.

Take care.

Yes. It gives some limited satisfaction. But the real enhancement comes through full acceptance that birth was a sentence of death.

I like a Stoic approach.

So I say: I am rather long in the tooth for a male in my line of descent.
I have certain chronic conditions that don't limit my choices in any way, have no real symptoms of any kind except for intermittent asthmatic obstruction, and might easily seem to be set up for 15 more years of life, except for a medical file that classes such notions under Haha!.
But it could be so much worse.
My body, though arthritis is knocking quite insistently on several anatomical doors, is not an agony to live in.
I can still do cardio, though my right knee complains.
And my dick? Well, it could be worse. It keeps going on farewell tours, though its energy flags.
It suddenly occurs to me that this half-empty glass must be half full. Ineluctably.
That's stoicism for you.
