Interesting Tidbits

In Hitler's Germania, the city set to replace Berlin, there were plans for a megalomaniacal Great Hall with a dome reaching over 1000', with 16 times the volume of the dome in St. Peter's Rome. The dome was so vast that upon inspection after the German defeat in 1945 US military engineers determined that if the dome were built, and filled with crowds of Nazi faithful, clouds would form and it would rain inside the building itself.

The capital of Turkmenistan, Asgabat, has a monument called the "Neutrality Arch" which celebrates the country's neutrality. Purched on top of it is a giant gold statue of the president who put it there, which rotates 360 degrees to allways face the sun.

That's a great little tidbit I have.

Ashkhabad is one of my hometown's Sister Cities. That's little-known, I'm sure, but it interests me.:biggrin:

Also, Santa Fe, the capital of my state, is the highest in elevation, and the oldest, capital city in the United States.

For the burning of Atlanta scene is Gone With The Wind they used sets from older movies, including the "Great Gates" from the movie King Kong.

I love King Kong. I hate Gone With The Wind.

Adam of the bible story "Adam and Eve" had a first wife, Lilith. Lilith and Adam were created at the same time out of dirt, unlike Eve who was created from Adam's rib (showing Adam's dominance). Lilith vanished when Adam refused to let her be on top during sex, claiming that missionary was the only way. Lilith then became a demon, and Eve was created. Lilith turned into a succubus, seducing men in their sleep and spreading disease, and killing infants. Any crib death used to be blamed on Lilith, hence the song "Lulaby" translating into "Lilith be gone." Adam and Eve was also a pre-existing Sumarian legend, where mankind was created by a snake god, which explains the snake. No, the snake does not represent the devil in Adam and Eve, it is common that gods of previous religions get portrayed as demons and tempters in the new religion.

Bit geeky, but still: Early (possibly all) versions of Windows 3.1 had encrypted code that would cause Windows to crash if run on the main MS-DOS competitor, DR-DOS.

The largest wasp nest ever recorded had a circumference of 8ft. and weighed 17lbs. 8 oz. Thats a bigass wasp nest.

The Inverse Square Law:

The intensity (or illuminance or irradiance) of light or other linear waves radiating from a point source (energy per unit of area perpendicular to the source) is inversely proportional to the square of the distance from the source so an object (of the same size) twice as far away, receives only ¼ the energy (in the same time period).

I stole the definition from wiki. In photo it's an important rule of thumb to keep in mind because it describes the falloff of the light as you move the source from the object it's illuminating.
