Jensen Ackles Joins The Boys Season 3 as 'The Original Superhero'

supernatural-jensen-ackles-dean-comic-con.jpg

From Supernatural to superhero: Jensen Ackles has joined the Season 3 cast of Amazon Prime’s The Boys, reuniting him with onetime Supernatural boss Eric Kripke.

Ackles will portray Soldier Boy, who after he fought in World War II became the first “super celebrity” and a mainstay of American culture for decades.

“When I was a child, I had a crazy, impossible dream — to provide Jensen Ackles with gainful employment,” The Boys showrunner Kripke said in a statement. “I’m happy to say that dream has come true. Jensen is an amazing actor, an even better person, smells like warm chocolate chip cookies, and I consider him a brother.

“As Soldier Boy, the very first Superhero, he’ll bring so much humor, pathos and danger to the role,” Kripke added. “I can’t wait to be on set with him again, and bring a bit of Supernatural to The Boys.”

Ackles this fall has the pandemic-delayed final episodes of Supernatural to film, in Vancouver.

The Boys‘ Season 3 renewal was announced during Comic-Con@Home in late July. Season 2 of the series will premiere Friday, September 4th, with new episodes available weekly through October 9th.

I would and I wouldn’t. I think he wants to show he’s more than Supernatural and taking on a more mature graphic show seems like his choice. Which sometimes means showing a little skin. Just depends. Nothing more than ass I would bet, but it just depends on how he wants to define himself as an actor outside of supernatural. And I’m sure the pay for an Amazon show is good. It could go either way. I’d say 40/60

In the comics the character is a total bitch boy and is introduced in a post-coital scene having been topped by Homelander who pushed him into sex to increase his chances of joining the team. There's a real impishness to him that's very different to what Ackles usually plays, should be interesting.

I hope this isn’t the only job he has lined up post-Supernatural... Jared gets everything handed to him on a silver platter (totally deserved, no shade) but this is what Jensen does? Interesting choice to make. Wonder what his full plans are. I find him fascinating these days.

Walker is a boring project to take, imo, and I don't doubt that ViacomCBS or WB (CW) offered Jensen and Misha something post-Supernatural. I'm glad he went with Amazon. It's also more practical, in that the workload will be less and he's available for his family and perhaps some film projects.

Walker will be a hit for the CW I’m sure. It has the potential to be good if they don’t fuck it up it and I’m sure Jared knows what he’s doing since he’s the big boss now. I feel as though Jensen may be doing one of those tricks Disney stars do to diversify themselves and get into something more ... unique. Hoping it goes well for him! Need to see him nude lol.

Maybe I'm projecting my desires but I feel like Jensen would have been up for showing his butt on Supernatural, especially if it were funny. Like we could have seen booty here:

I'm surprised they never asked him for it but maybe CW was scared it wouldn't be family friendly enough. They're sort of edgy but also not that edgy.

I think being featured in The Boys is a better idea than jumping into a whole series right away. It's an established hit for Amazon and he isn't carrying the whole show by himself.

Yeah, Walker will do fine, but it won't take Jared to a new platform in his career.

Jensen is probably using The Boys to transition into the anti-hero comic-book realm, and we know he wants to play a superhero (given his appearances for Halloween and the fact that he auditioned for Captain America). I think he's using this series as a stepping stone, and since he already has a relationship with WB, I wouldn't be surprised to see him in a future DC venture as the hero or villain, since he's talented and versatile enough for either, which isn't true for many actors.

A good number for a CW show is around 2 million viewers after a week. "The Boys" first season pulled more around four times that in the U.S. alone (Amazon's a global service) and that's not including PC or mobile watching, plus it had great reviews. His appearance is going to get more eyeballs and exposure than Padalecki will get with "Walker". Whether Ackles will capitalise on that - hopefully he does.

i wouldn't classify walker as something that'd i'd ever see on the cw. simply because it doesn't seem like the show that'd attract the network's common demographic, at least based off what i remember from the original show when i'd randomly see an episode as a kid.and also jared is the least liked one, mostly due to his past controversies. so it's hard to tell if the show will do well.
jensen will be laughing on his way to the bank tho. he managed to leave a small, low budget network and got into a popular show on a streaming service.
i don't expect season 3 of the boys coming out before 2022 tho, because season 2 hasn't aired yet, and with covid, productions aren't at full steam

In the U.S. yes, in other countries a few productions have been underway for a while. "Boys" S3 is all locked in and set for filming from January in Toronto. Ackles is shooting the last two "Supernatural" eps from this week. They tend to release the eps 15 months after they start shooting so my guess is Easter 2022 airing.

It's kind of unclear exactly how his character will truly end up being.

The showrunners have made some pretty big changes to the characters/"superheroes" of the current main cast, and the description from the press-release kinda make it seem like this one might (again) be their own spin on a (surviving) original Soldier Boy. The easily frightened and weak willed Soldier Boy is like the 3rd in line (it's a legacy title that gets passed down in the comics).

I don't know... we'll see.

I get the feeling they're just gonna make their own parody/twist of Captain America...which is kind of the schtick of the character anyway. Wouldn't be surprised if Eric pitched the role to Jensen himself due the Captain America association, actually lol.

Besides nudity, I wonder if they'll make him go through some sort of "superhero body training" or if they'll just put him in a fake-muscles suit like Homeland and call it a day?
