I was going to say THAT. But, for real, HE should have been the one to have gotten the spin-off, he can carry a show and has natural comedic skills.

Can we please talk about that. Because Yara is a TERRIBLE actress. It’s like somewhere between staring at a cardboard box and drying paint. So boring. I love Yara as an advocate for causes & a speaker for her generation, but as an actress, she’s the worst.

One of the reasons she got the spin-off is because outside of acting, she built a hpresence in a way the others didn’t. She was so vocal and present in putting herself in front of relevant causes and issues, intelligently speaking and advocating. That gave her a big brand and platform.

Another huge factor is plain ol’ nepotism. Her father was Prince’s personal photographer & assistant, and her cousin is the rapper Nas. So she comes from a family that has connections, knows the industry, and understands how to get the deals.

I agree with EVERYTHING you are saying, I want Marcus to branch out and do more IF he can. Realistically speaking, Black-ish has another one or two (good) seasons left before it ends. Actually, I really don't even like what they are doing with his character because, to me, it seems like it's a repeating circle with his character and his story never goes anywhere. I want to see him tackle films, big and small, and eventually do a nude scene, lol.

A lot of people are mixed race AND darkskinned and a ton of Puerto Ricans and other people of Latin America are too.
Idk I’m just saying comic books have a weird history of introducing biracial black characters but then never portraying them as mixed in their appearance instead just making them a dark skinned black person . It’s lowkey racist and plays into the racist beliefs that all black people look the same . We don’t we come in all shades and mixes like any other race , but comics never portray that

she got the spin-off because she was the oldest going to college... they have always positioned the show as a modern day Cosby show... so her spinoff is like Different World ... when Denise went off to college... love show .. and I think she is beautiful and a great actress... Marcus could def get a spin-off next...but he’d have to graduate and move out his parents house for that to work... he makes appearances on grownish... so I could see him joining that show or getting his own in the future

She got the spin-off because she comes from a family with connections and industry know-how, she has a huge social media brand, and good ol’ fashioned nepotism.

She is not a “great actress” by any stretch of the imagination. She’s literally the most boring character on both shows, and has the least screen presence or range. Which is why, on Grownish, they surrounded her with a cast of ten people who get nearly equal screen time to make up for it.

Marcus’ character “Junior” has already moved out, and now the character shares an apartment with a steady girlfriend. “Junior” wouldn’t need to graduate to do that, since the character is demonstrating people who take a non-collegiate path.

Oh my god ... you’re right ... i didn’t realize her dad was a celebrity photographer! That’s so fucked up... these children of celebrity photographers have unfairly been given advancements in Hollywood for far to long... enough is enough! thank you for shedding light on this outrageous injustice. I know longer think she is beautiful funny or entertaining. Your opinion is now mine. And I hope one day we can get all her followers and fans of grownish to realize her for the fraud she is. And all this time I just thought the reason they gave her a spin-off before junior was because she was the oldest and first to move out the house and that it wasn’t clever nod to pay homage to A Different World. Damn. Thanks for enlightening me. But seriously you should pitch a Junior spin off to Kenya Barris lets get that ugly untalented boring girl off our screens!!! I’m sure if more people knew she was merely the daughter of a celebrity photographer shed loose all her followers and endorsement deals hey maybe even get her recast!

I hope you stretched before all that reaching for this casual oversimplication and complete straw man response. :joy:

Yara is a beautiful girl. (Your obsession with her looks is odd, especially when NO ONE has mentioned that whatsoever). More importantly, though, she’s also extremely talented: as a speaker, thinker, advocate, representative for her generation, and general public figure. I can see her entering many fields with great success and ultimately being a positive force of change in the world. She has a wonderful heart and a brilliant mind for her age. She is NOT however a talented actor, in my opinion. Multiple things can be true.

Her father isn’t merely a “celebrity photographer”. In addition to being a well-known music videos and commercial producer, he was the personal photographer of Prince, one of the most iconic artists in music history. You’ve also conveniently left out that her cousin is Nas, one of the most popular rappers and legendary musicians ever. Those kind of connections open doors, whether you’d like to admit it or not. It gives her an instant link to a network of high-power decision makers & an understanding of how the industry works. All of which have no doubt benefitted Yara. Oversimplifications and lack of nuance are not wise.

And while Grown-ish may have been a nod to A Different World (the eldest daughter going off to college)...the fact that Barris (and Disney) even developed that idea and made that decision in the fist place is telling, especially considering that Yara is one of the least experienced on the show and her character was one of the least popular.

Everybody’s not going to feel the way you feel. Everybody won’t think the way you think. You have your thoughts, I have mine. You can continue with the gross simplifications and misrepresentations of what I’ve said. Or, conversely, we can agree to disagree.

But can we please not derail this thread as others so often are. Generally, this is one of the few threads that doesn’t contain foolery.
