lighthouse: I went through a series of meds; Prozac, wellbutrin, and a couple of others before settling on effexor I was on effexor for about 4 years until it stopped working. One of the reasons I kept switching was the sexual side effects. One completely killed the boners. Another made it very difficult to start urinating. The effexor was a good balance because it stabilised the thoughts but left me with some sexual function. Erections were not as firm, I definitely had to make an effort to cum. It wouldn't just spontaneously explode, but with some straining, I was able to get some results. I think I hung a bit smaller - probably the same mechanism as the softer boners. The effexor stopped working ( I was up to 300mg/day extended release), so I switched to Cymbalta, 200 mg/day, which is about the equivalent of 75gm Effexor. The problem with Effexor is its short half-life. After about 24 hours, most of it has metabolised from your system. But your brain is not so fast to start producing serotonin again, so there is a big valley in your serotonin levels, unless you take another effexor. It's the lag in serotonin production that makes you feel like you have the flu & your head is spinning. This is why most docs try other meds before prescribing effexor - the unpleasant side effects of withdrawal that are not as present with meds that have longer half-lives.
this is a good site for information:
http://www.crazymeds.org/

make sure you type .org and not .com. The .com is just trying to sell stuff.

It's not done by a doctor, so it's a lot more candid about what the drugs do and what their side effects are. It's best to be informed about these drugs, many of which are very effective. Get your information from a number of different sources & make your own decisions.

revilo8888: I think the worst medicaments are diuretics. I'm not old and I make a lot of sports but I have hypertension. First I had do take beta blockers. I heard a lot of bad things about them. But they are not really bad. Running with them was no problem and erections were just a little weaker. No problems. But after three years I went to the doctor again.(Sorry I don't like doctors) And the doctor wasn't confident with my hypertension 140/ 90. So I have to take diuretic (hydrochlorothiazide). That medicament is good for the hypertension, but bad for the erections. Nobody said that!! I didn't think about that, but I have really weak erections and very weak ejaculations now! I hate it!!!!!!!!!

140/90 would not be considered hypertensive in most peoples books, even if it is a resting BP. While it is slightly high I must admit, it is more likely that meds would do more harm than good in that case. Was a cause found? (eg: cholestrol) In which case they should rather have modified your diet etc.. I have nothing against diuretics, they are great for CCF patients etc.. But for a 140/90 BP it is a bit excessive. Note: This is in context of your age, if you were a teenager with this BP I would be a bit more worried.
