lighthouse: I went through a series of meds; Prozac, wellbutrin, and a couple of others before settling on effexor I was on effexor for about 4 years until it stopped working. One of the reasons I kept switching was the sexual side effects. One completely killed the boners. Another made it very difficult to start urinating. The effexor was a good balance because it stabilised the thoughts but left me with some sexual function. Erections were not as firm, I definitely had to make an effort to cum. It wouldn't just spontaneously explode, but with some straining, I was able to get some results. I think I hung a bit smaller - probably the same mechanism as the softer boners. The effexor stopped working ( I was up to 300mg/day extended release), so I switched to Cymbalta, 200 mg/day, which is about the equivalent of 75gm Effexor. The problem with Effexor is its short half-life. After about 24 hours, most of it has metabolised from your system. But your brain is not so fast to start producing serotonin again, so there is a big valley in your serotonin levels, unless you take another effexor. It's the lag in serotonin production that makes you feel like you have the flu & your head is spinning. This is why most docs try other meds before prescribing effexor - the unpleasant side effects of withdrawal that are not as present with meds that have longer half-lives.
this is a good site for information:

make sure you type .org and not .com. The .com is just trying to sell stuff.
It's not done by a doctor, so it's a lot more candid about what the drugs do and what their side effects are. It's best to be informed about these drugs, many of which are very effective. Get your information from a number of different sources & make your own decisions.
