Men of Playgirl

Well I think you’re even more of a Playgirl fan than I am lol! Let me be clear by saying that the vast majority of the book is made up of the photos. I don’t know if they’ve been remastered or not. They look good enough to me! The text is entertaining IMHO but I wouldn’t buy the book for that reason.

Again, what I appreciate is that gay men are given such a prominent voice in the book. The introduction, written by filmmaker Bruce LaBruce, explicitly mentions using Playgirl as jerk-off fodder.
The dirty little secret of Playgirl was always that it was prominently kept afloat by us. I always found the denials of that kinda hilarious-and a little maddening.

Masturbating to Playgirl was a special thrill and a rite-of-passage for many gay men and youth of a certain age. It was mostly because it was a stroke-book that was more readily available than more explicit gay porn was at the time. But the thrill was also partly because the men exposed were not “supposed” to be for our eyes. I mean it was with the flimsiest of pretences really, but it was there nonetheless. That made it more titillating for some of us.

I think the book is a great collectors item for gay men for that reason. As a history lesson as much as anything. There’s a nostalgic innocence that goes along with the smuttiness

@PDBG I just got my copy. The photos are not remastered, and there's nothing I hadn't seen elsewhere. (Believe me, I know...) The paper isn't even glossy or higher-quality stock. It is hardbound (no, not THAT way!). The written content and the new essays are the main draw. It's a solid effort that I'm not sorry to have. Hopefully the new publisher will someday create a higher-quality version and go...deeper.

Thank you for the review. I soon detected that it was not something that would bring never before seen pictures or an in depth look and exclusive backstage info. I was hoping for something that in fact had a connection to the people that really made it all happen back in the day and not someone writing about the magazine or what it meant to have a magazine like that back in the day. Though I see the value of having a book of the kind being published now, I was a bit disappointed when I saw they just scanned old mags. I dunno what type of contracts they signed back in the day and if the original published would have the right to republish the pics in a new book, but imagine if we could see a remaster of the images we only saw published on paper with 70s/80s tech! If they could digitize the images by scanning the original films - wow - I can only image how even more gorgeous some models/pictures would look now. I also feel that I have read online many stories about the mag - especially in a place like this forum - that might have been way more revelatory than anything I may find in the book. I trust your judgement and also @Marilynluvah's but I guess I'll see if I can find the book at the local library  and sample it before making a decision about buying it.

This is one thing AI is actually good for. I've seen some AI-remastered porn from the 1990s and the difference is incredible. From a business standpoint, it's possible that they've published this volume to raise quick money and gauge interest before investing time and expense in further refreshes. Meanwhile, I'm sure one of us here on this forum is happily busy exploring how to AI-ify Photoshop, and we're all going to be very grateful to them one of these days! I'm obsessed with all the work for Playgirl by the photographer Norbert Jobst, myself. I'd love to see every single one of his shoot outtakes.

"Flash! Ah-ah, Savior of the Universe!"⚡🎶🚀 Between his hairy chest, Queen soundtrack and the fact that I had recently discovered my sister's Playgirl this movie is one of my favorite high school memories.
“Flash Gordon” was a different Playgirl model. He was in Playgirl ad Andrew Cooper aka Sam Jones the actor who played Flash Gordon.

If you follow the green arrows up that's exactly who they lead to.

Ultimately I feel that any true fan of Playgirl-with an interest in its history-would want to invest in this book. Yes it’s far from comprehensive. But are we ever likely to get that book? If that one ever comes out, I’ll be the first in line to get my copy, but I’m not holding my breath. I’d love, of course, to be proven wrong!

The pics are fine IMHO and more than serve my memories of the originals. It’s not like they’re blurry or anything. I personally don’t actually want or need a remastered version of what are already classics.

To me the best writing on Playgirl by far-especially from the queer angle- is Matthew Rettenmund’s Esquire mag article that came out in 2017. It’s basically just an oral history told in interviews by some of the key players involved through the years. Now if he decided to write a book, expanding on his original article, with even more insider anecdotes, outtakes, and historical perspective, I think we might have that book some of us have been waiting for.

There are other books written about Playgirl of course. But most of them are written by people like Jessanne Collins-once one of it’s editors-with a decided invested interest in down-playing the gay angle. I mean, I somewhat get it. Playgirl was supposed to be a feminist answer to Playboy. But LORDY, that’s not how it turned out. And that’s what makes PG a fascinating pop-culture artifact to this day.

Anyway, THOSE books I’m not particularly interested in investing in!

The only place you could see dick outside of porn back in the day.

They had "Hung" editions, but never found of any of the models that hung like dudes like me, Mr. BigBull.

I was in my early 20s when I first saw a Playgirl magazine. I only wanted to see how big these dudes' dicks were. I wasn't lusting after them. I still enjoy comparing my dick to other men (always want to win, right?) It's part mental illness, part evolutionary biology -- neither of which is my fault.

My father said when he was younger that every dude out there wanted to see John Holmes's big dick in the 70s. These were pussy-lovin' dudes, or rough necks, as you might call them. I never felt gay or bi for looking at Playgirl. I have a big penis fetish, which has intensified over the years. I am not ashamed of it anymore, though. I don't choice what makes my big boy bone up.

I'd just wish that there had been a true LPSG-style Playgirl edition. LOL.

To each their own buddy! I was the exact opposite. Desperately thumbing through Playgirl’s in stores like 7-Eleven looking for good and worthy ASS shots for my horny eyes. That’s how I decided what Playgirl’s had to come home with me or not!

I was just interested in comparing my dick size.

I appreciate a hot male ass now that I am mature and understand myself.

There's nothing wrong with your case -- we're all wired a bit differently. We all can't be the same.

I'm sure there were plenty of hot male asses for you to see in Playgirl.

Take care.

some nice cocks but not really hung...except a few twins...back then,
hung cocks may have seemed better suited to a male version of
hustler vs playboy/playgirl...more of a wholesome mag.
