I have only just got round to reading the start of this topic, having joined LPSG relatively recently and am a bit surprised by the assumptions that relatively brief swimsuits are only worn in gay or secluded settings.
In the UK there is no problem with straight family men wearing briefer swimsuits than most of those pictured in this topic in public swimming pools, hotels, family beaches and family waterparks.

Can anybody explain the apparent obsession with wearing modest swimsuits as big as this one and even longer?

That is the largest swimsuit I possess.
Some of the others I wear at public pools, hotels and family beaches.
