Classically-trained cellist through college, but I rarely play anymore.
I took lessons on the violoncello in college, and was a fast learner. My teacher started me on with 5th and 7th positions after only two weeks... I loved 'cello, such a rich and vibrant instrument.

I played contrabass in a dixieland combo, but we really only rehearsed much at all, right before a gig. I didn't develop the necessary calluses, and would always be bleeding fairly profusely by the end of a performance. Funny, it only hurt a little; the worst part was cleaning the damned thing up afterward.

Hahah, quercus, that is a little more complex. The bocal, whisper key, flick keys, long joint and butt joint complicate matters on the skin bassoon! With the skin flute, you only have to worry about the head joint, the body, and the foot joint!

Good lord man! Go get laid!!!

I do everything creative except music and the "physical arts" (i.e. painting, drawing, etc.).

I guess I'm the creative mind of the new age. I do a lot of movies, animation, and other digital arts.

The irony is I was born on the same day as Elvis Presley and David Bowie, so I think cosmology took a day off in 1985. Although, Stephen Hawking was born on that day too, so maybe I still fit in somewhere

I was a classically trained pianist. I played organ, and trumpet too. I am an amazing whistler. I'd whistle as I delivered the mail. My patrons complained about me stopping. Sigh I once had perfect pitch and couldn't sing off key if I tried.

Looks like I'm being prodded here...

Dannymawg is a committed rocker, and quite a fine one at that.

He has the best taste in music.
Rock music, that is

I have some fingers in different pies - improv/modern jazz, cheezy 70s Lite FM, New Wave, metal, punk/hardcore, techno/electronica, the usual pop genres - but I'm your typical mouthbreathing big-dicked rock drummer. I have a penchant for rigid tempos, of which there were none in music until the advent of beatboxes/drum machines/computers. I think the best time I ever had in a band was playing disco covers - just being in the backline and getting a mindless, booty-shaking, four-on-the-floor groove going, and watching a crowd get down with it made for some vivid and precious memories. "Free your mind, and your ass will follow" :biggrin1:

About the only genres I have problems with are:

blues (they may be the blues, but they're not my blues)

classical (although advancing age, and needing to know the roots of music referenced by more recent pop icons in general, has had me exploring in recent years - Debussy, Holst, Bartok, in addition to the usual suspects...)

current pop/rock (derivative and solipsistic in most cases)

commercial jingles (tied into my love/hate relationship with advertising, but I recognize the serious power of them... "Sweet dreams you can't resist... N E S T L E S"

country (Elwood Blues: "What kind of music do you usually have in here?" Claire the barmaid: "Oh, we got both kinds - country and western!")

most any current dance music played in gay bars (and I'm gay - once the glow sticks and poppers appear, I'm outta there)

In any event, I shouldn't harsh on any music - it's all good, and I'm a hack anyway. It's always been more than a hobby but less than a career :biggrin1:

Wanna know where real rock music is, in 2007? Check this shit out: Lightning Bolt

I watch this, and wistfully grin... and wish I was 18 again...

How could I have forgotten Danny? MercurialBliss was DEFINATELY right about his taste in music... Gimme the Gap Band, the Ohio Players, or Iggy Pop or even some Agnostic Front any day!!!!!! I would love to jam with you!!!!

I have a degree in music, and while trumpet is my main instrument, I know enough about every instrument to produce simple tunes on each. I do not play anymore. I work as a recording engineer.

That is fascinating brother... REALLY COOL!!!!!!!

I used to play drums. Could be brilliant at times. but generally incompetent. I played steel drums too. i'm the panman but i forgot how. would like to pick them up again

Low brass player here. I get paid to play louder than should be allowed for my instrument.
