I'm thinking about getting mine done again, but there are so many horror stories about failed piercings, migration, rejection, etc I'm starting to wonder if these ever do just heal "perfectly" :(
I had them done when I was a teen but they never healed properly so I took them out. Looking back I think the problem was that the piercer used rings (that were too small in diameter) instead of longer barbells and placed them a little too deep.

I'd like them pierced diagonally (like this but a bit more diagonal). I guess that's going to limit the type of jewelry I can wear but I really just like the simple barbell look, especially through a t-shirt.

Have any of you had your nipples pierced? Do they ever actually heal perfectly or is it a lifelong battle with sterilization and migration and rejection? Any problems with re-piercing nipples (I can't even see where they were originally pierced anymore)?
Do they affect breast-feeding in any way?

I've had mine done since the day I was 18, and I'm around 30 years old now. I've had pretty much zero issues with them, other than one asshole who thought it was cute to yank on the jewelry, and it made the piercing all angry, and it made me all angry, and he got his ass kicked out of my list of FWBs. I had barbells put in for the initial piercing and healing process. I had a span of time where I liked the look of captive bead rings, but I've been back to barbells for quite some time. Other than the initial heal time, where I was using sea salt soaks to aid with the healing, and the one butthole who yanked on the jewelry, I've had zero issues. I did have the piercings start to shrink after the jewelry was only out for a day for medical reasons, but that was only mildly uncomfortable putting the jewelry back in.

I can't say as to any possible issues with re-piercing, as I've never tried to have a piercing redone. Any of them (and at one point I had 12 piercings). Breast feeding, I'm not sure about either, sorry. I didn't have the chance to breast feed my child. I did still lactate like crazy and waiting for my body to realize nothing was going to be getting used was an unpleasant experience. I noted zero issues with expressing milk, which was done as a bit of an experiment. I can't imagine keeping jewelry in while doing something like breast feeding, and at that point I imagine the piercings would heal over by the time you had weaned/etc. That being said, having had my nipples pierced didn't seem to have any affect on milk production or expressing it, for me.

Oh! It isn't as though it really has any relevance, but just in case you're curious, I have both nipples pierced horizontally. I wear 14g jewelry :) I got them pierced years ago because I love how it looks. I still love how it looks on me, and it's fun + pleasurable having the "extra" played with.

Edited to add: No vote from me, because I think body modifications are so dang personal. Sorry!

That's what the piercer put in right from the start, and a much too small one, and that's probably why it didn't heal properly and started to migrate downward.

Does going with a larger gauge piercing increase or decrease the chance of it migrating?
The breastfeeding thing seems to be divided. Some say leave them in, some say take them out, and then there's the "OMG the bead could come unscrewed and you could kill your baby" crowd

This is scary:
"I took my jewelry out before I actually got pregnant, but when I squeeze pre-milk out of my nipples, it comes out the piercing holes before the end of my nipple! I've asked other woman on the BFing board here about it & they said theirs never closed up really either & it just ends up like a fast flow nipple with extra holes lol. I've even gotten a bit out of a hole from when I first got pierced & the piercing was crooked so I got it re-done only a few days after. That hole has been completely closed for a good 6 years now, but with the hormones & changes to my nipple it is open now!"

I don't want to lactate like a garden sprinkler

From the research that I've done, which take as you will, is generally and within reason super thin/small jewelry increases the odds of it migrating. Due to that, I've never gotten a piercing done at anything smaller than a 14g. The largest I've had done was a 10g and that was uh, quite the experience. I like pain, specifically pain from needles and blades among other things, but it was quite the endorphin rush. I've only had one problem with migration. I had a somewhat poorly done navel piercing (placement wasn't the most ideal and that piercing was a little finicky during the healing process), and that only started to happen after I got pregnant. It started to migrate so I removed the jewelry before it got ugly and never ended up putting it back in. It happened so long ago I actually had forgotten that it was fussy when I wrote my initial post.

I've known of women who did have milk come out through their nipple piercings. It didn't happen with mine, but I imagine that's up to one's anatomy, how the piercing is done, and where exactly the piercing is placed. That's all theorizing though, so don't take it as gospel, of course.

What should I look for when choosing a piercer? I want to make sure they're done right this time.
I have a friend that's into body mods but she does all of her own piercings, she offered to do mine but I think I'd rather go to a professional

I wouldn't let a friend do it, unless they were a professional, and doing it in their professional capacity, in their professional space.

This is a good starting place of stuff to look for, as far as picking a good professional piercing artist:

I say yes... But I may be biased because I love my pierced nips. They've been skewered vertically for 11 years. No regrets.

They were actually my first piercings. Ever.

@MickeyLee has experience in this profession, perhaps have a chat with her ;)

I can speak from lactation/LLL assistant.
I worked with three mommas who were nursing with piercings.
One used monofilament with knots to keep the holes open, and did have interesting high pressure moments.
But my own, non pierced nipple, could go across the room and hit someone in the eye.
The other monofilament user didn't get much high pressure, and had more issues with let down reflex than anything piercing related.
One got a "permanent" ring of some sort, no beads to get swallowed.

If the babe is latched on, sprinkler won't matter.

Mine were very painful. The piercer put a small diameter captive bead ring in them. The ring was way too small and they started to migrate which became even more painful. I had to remove them.
That's exactly what happened to me. They started to migrate downward and never really healed because the loops were always moving, it just got to be too much maintenance.
I was very young and didn't do any research at all before I had it done totally spontaneously at some shady tattoo parlour where the guys seemed to be concentrating more on my tits than what they were doing

Two Christmases ago I received a pair of earrings from my daughter. She knew my piercings had grown over. I don't like to wear jewelry when I'm on the job site. But I did want to get re-pierced to wear her gift.

Shit, it hurt! Yes, it was a mall job, but they did have the high-tech stuff. Didn't matter. I guess they hit scar tissue or something. But I have them in and I'm not taking them out!

I'm not about to do that to a more sensitive part!
