presumably because one or more noisy people pissed their pants and cried about it. if there was a time to have closed that thread, it was immediately after DWhatever posted it, since he was obviously trolling (and yes, he should be banned - not for posting that thread specifically, but because everything he posted was a troll for attention). after actual intelligent posters showed up and generated a legitimate debate on the subject, there was nothing to be gained by closing the thread itself.
