I think the total cost was about $1500 and it wound up costing me about $400. It's a lot of money and comes down to how much risk is acceptable when, if you bet wrong, the outcome is a certain and messy death. Around here, because there have been human rabies deaths, they will give you the shots if you wake up with a bat in the room. Apparently their teeth are so small that you can't see a bite mark. Likewise, if one touches you, it's shots time.

I'm thinking that with his insurance, it cost him $700 or $800. Until you mentioned it, I thought my memory was defective, but I think the numbers are correct. I know that nearly any price is worth it to avoid getting rabies, but I just can't imagine why they are so expensive!

He actually did have a bite. I think his experience was something like this: He was out hiking, and felt a small thump against his hat, but thought he had walked under a low-hanging tree limb or something. Then he kept hearing an unfamiliar, high-pitched sound. He pulled off his hat, kept hearing it, and pulled off his scarf and jacket. The bat had somehow gotten tangled in his knitted scarf. As he was trying to get it out, he got the bite.

I saw the doctor today, consulted with my mom who is a nurse and my brother whose a cardiac surgeon and all of them think I'll be fine and its not worth getting the PEP shots. I'm still nervous that they could obviously be wrong, but I don't have insurance and they don't think the small risk is worth the $1500 for the shots. Every medical professional and even a vet I talked to said that the animal must be symptomatic at the time of the incident to be able to pass the virus through it's saliva.

That, along with the fact the bite never pierced my skin makes rabies an extreme low risk in my case. I'm a nervous person by nature, so I'll probably be very paranoid anyway for the next month or two. The guy who my ex cheated on me with better hope I'm okay, there are a few things I've always wanted to do but the consequences of prison have always stopped me . I'm sure I'll be okay, I'll keep in touch.

You don't have insurance? When do the benefits start? What happened to the new job? Did it not work out?

Let us know.

Glad to hear you're ok. I wouldn't worry about it either. You've done what you could and that's all you can do.

Take care orbitz!
