I'm thinking that with his insurance, it cost him $700 or $800. Until you mentioned it, I thought my memory was defective, but I think the numbers are correct. I know that nearly any price is worth it to avoid getting rabies, but I just can't imagine why they are so expensive!I think the total cost was about $1500 and it wound up costing me about $400. It's a lot of money and comes down to how much risk is acceptable when, if you bet wrong, the outcome is a certain and messy death. Around here, because there have been human rabies deaths, they will give you the shots if you wake up with a bat in the room. Apparently their teeth are so small that you can't see a bite mark. Likewise, if one touches you, it's shots time.

He actually did have a bite. I think his experience was something like this: He was out hiking, and felt a small thump against his hat, but thought he had walked under a low-hanging tree limb or something. Then he kept hearing an unfamiliar, high-pitched sound. He pulled off his hat, kept hearing it, and pulled off his scarf and jacket. The bat had somehow gotten tangled in his knitted scarf. As he was trying to get it out, he got the bite.
